I honestly can't remember a week post-Origin selection announcement that caused the stir of last week.

Brad Fittler's decision to leave out Latrell Mitchell, the call to drop Cody Walker, the recall of Blake Ferguson and others rocked the Origin landscape.

Some of us sat on the fence with shock while others lampooned the under pressure Blues coach.

Fast forward a week and thanks to one of the most convincing Origin towel ups in memory and it's fair to say that Freddy got it right.

I'm still not 100% sold on the dropping on Latrell but Wighton had a brilliant game in the centres.

He did check Will Chambers which lead to a QLD penalty try but otherwise, he won his personal battle with the Storm star.

Literally every other decision Fittler made was an undisputed success. I'd even argue the Wighton shift was also successful, although I'm confident that Mitchell would have done the job.

Daniel Saifiti's selection was as genuine a bolter selection as I can remember.

His opening stanza was very good. He ran for 100 metres in the middle and helped set the early platform.

Jake Trbojevic moving from lock into the front row was pure genius.

He pipped his brother Tom for man of the match honours in a 9/10 performance. He was simply unstoppable in the middle.

Paul Vaughan kept the roll going after coming on.

Dale Finucane was a monster on debut. He hit hard in attack and defense.

Not even the most bias Maroons man could argue NSW didn't win the middle battle.

It wasn't even close.

Blake Ferguson, his traditional dropped bomb aside, was huge. He played as an extra forward and helped start every NSW set off with aggression and power.

When QLD stopped kicking to him he made sure he was at dummy half for the next hit up.

James Maloney was the best half on the field by a country mile.

With Maloney you get good, you get bad. You get brilliant try assists that make your jaw drop, you also get penalties and errors that make you rip your heart out.

Maloney bombed a certain try with a forward pass late in the first half and gave away two horror penalties.

He also completely dictated where the game was played and had the ball on a string to set up multiple tries.

Wade Graham's inclusion despite just 80 minutes of footy in 2019 was a masterstroke.

He covered Boyd Cordner's left side perfectly while the captain was off for a HIA and then played brilliantly when asked to play in the halves.

There is no other backrower in the game like the Sharks co-captain.

As for Tommy Turbo, I doubt you'd find anyone who would call his selection a risk, even out of position.

He's an Origin winner from the wing and a world cup winger in the centres.

His return allowed the Blues a route of attack they lacked in game one.

Turbo was literally everywhere.

He was the first support player behind the breaks, he was making breaks himself out wide, but he was also terrorising Ponga in the middle of the field.

Chrichton, Walker, Mitchell, Morris and co can probably count themselves a little unlucky to have missed Origin II but as it stands, you have to hand it to Freddy.

He made some incredible calls. Brave calls.

Ridiculous calls.

They all came off.

That's not to say the Origin I squad wouldn't have gotten the job done in Perth but the fact is Fittler's charges got it done in scintillating fashion.

An injury to Nathan Cleary will provide the major headache for Origin III.

A straight swap for Luke Keary looks the obvious decision but there's no guarantee he'll be at 100%.

Mitchell Pearce will be there in discussions while there are already calls for Wade Graham to play at six.

We'll discuss this in next week's Origin watch but whichever decision Fittler makes, I'll be backing it 100%.

He's earned that through the risks he took between games one and two and the turn around in results it lead to.

There were plenty of doubts following the game two announcements.

We here even asked if Freddy was genius or crazy!?

A 32-point victory in a do or die clash in neutral territory says it all.

Genius!!!

  1. I agree with many that Cordner must be replaced by Graham game 3.
Was very average. A few ball carries and tackles but not in Graham’s class.
Graham’s left side skills embarrassed overrated Cordner who was a passenger.
Game rating of 6 was flattering.
