A rare sight of positive news has arrived at Red Hill with exciting prop Joe Ofahengaue expected to sign a new three-year deal with Brisbane.

NRL.com understand Ofahengaue and his management are in the late stages of agreeing a deal with the maroon and gold that will sign the 23-year-old until the end of 2022.

The news comes after the Broncos' poor showing at ANZ Stadium with a 38-6 defeat to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, in what was Brisbane's first clash against former coach Wayne Bennett.

Ofahengaue's deal is all but confirmed yet falls in the same week Kodi Nikorima leaves Suncorp Stadium, having signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Warriors, effective this Friday.

Since his debut for the club in 2015, Ofahengaue has played in 77 games for the Broncos and is in contention for an Origin debut for Queensland following a breakout season last year.

With Ofahengaue's imminent long term future with Brisbane, coach Anthony Seibold has released a hands-off decree to rival clubs following reports James Roberts is interested in a return to Redfern.

Roberts is contracted with Brisbane until the end of the 2022 season and recently declined to speak on his future at the club.

"I'm not here to talk about off-field stuff," Roberts told NRL.com.

Roberts' ongoing Achilles issues have marred the New South Welshman's season, admitting more precautions will need to take place in his recovery.

"I'm alright, I take it day by day and I'm trying to get it right before each game, it felt alright today," Roberts said.

"I trained through the week with it, it does sometimes mean I've got a different warm up or do different sessions [to the team] but that's just how I manage it and it depends how I feel, but it's OK at the moment."

  1. I’m not convinced his current form calls for an origin debut, but seeing the lack depth in QLD, he might just make it. Let’s hope convinces the selectors in the remaining games before SOO 1.
