The NRL has overhauled State of Origin's Wally Lewis Medal voting format.

The new rules will see the selectors, Mal Meninga, Darren Lockyer and Laurie Daley, vote 3-2-1 every game, abolishing the usual 5-4-3-2-1 system.

Players will also be required to feature in at least two of the three games to be eligible to win the award.

In the event of a tie, an independent judge will elect the casting vote to determine the player of the series.

The changes come after Slater's 2018 crowning drew criticism, with many claimed Damien Cook, James Tedesco, Boyd Cordner and Tom Trbojevic were robbed.

Despite winning last year's series, Blues coach Brad Fittler admitted to being frustrated by Slater winning the Wally Lewis Medal.

"The silver lining would be if the Wally Lewis Medal was hanging around someone’s neck in here," an emotional Fittler told the Herald straight after Queensland's series-ending win.

"Terrible. Terrible … Who chooses it? Seriously. Seriously. Seriously. Seriously … Why does Billy need that? He’s got everything [from the game] already. Ridiculous."

The changes to the voting system were rubber stamped on Monday.

NSW hooker Damien Cook is currently the favourite to be named man of the match in Wednesday's opener in Brisbane.
