The dust is only just settling on Penrith Panthers' third straight NRL premiership, but the launch of betting markets is whetting the appetite for the NRL 2024 season at this early stage.
Ahead of the 2024 NRL campaign, the Panthers are the bookmakers favourites at $3.75, and it is not difficult to see why having dominated in 2023 to complete a hat-trick of NRL Grand Final wins.
The Panthers were excellent across the regular season as they secured 18 wins and lost just six times to top the ladder.
Their points difference of +333 was over 100 points clear of closest rivals the Brisbane Broncos, who they would eventually defeat in the Grand Final. They ultimately went on to defeat the New Zealand Warriors, Melbourne Storm and Broncos in the finals to secure glory in 2023.
It wasn't a campaign without its woes though. The Panthers actually slipped off top-spot on the ladder following their 32-18 loss to the Eels in the penultimate week of the campaign.
They were able to scramble back to the top as they beat the North Queensland Cowboys 44-12 as the Broncos failed to take advantage as they were beaten 32-22 by the Storm, but this was a real wake up call and served Penrith well in the finals.
The Broncos are available at $4.50 to be crowned premiers in 2024, but they twice had the chance to humble the Panthers and failed this year. First, they lost their final game with this allowing their rivals to move above them on the ladder, while they fell to an agonising 26-24 defeat in the Grand Final. Can Brisbane bounce back from that?
The South Sydney Rabbitohs ($9.50) are third favourites despite missing the finals in 2023, while Sydney Roosters ($10.00) and Melbourne Storm ($12.00) make up the top five in the betting, but they are someway short of the top two.
The Warriors ($19), Newcastle Knights ($21), Cronulla Sharks ($21) and Canberra Raiders ($34) all did play finals footy in 2023 but are not regarded as leading contenders for the 2024 premiership.
Shorter than them, or around the same ballpark odds, in the betting market are the Cowboys ($19), Parramatta Eels ($21) and Manly Sea Eagles ($23). All three are predicted from improved campaigns after finishing 11th, 10th and 12th respectively on the ladder.
St George Illawarra Dragons and Wests Tigers (both $81) are the roughies on the 17 sides once after finishing bottom of the pile in 2023.
