Michael Morgan to play five-eighth for Australia

Michael Morgan is the front-runner to fill the vacancy of the five-eighth role in the Kangaroos team, with Johnathan Thurston unavailable. Morgan will partner Cronk in the World Cup opener against England on Friday.

Morgan had to strive for his position, battling it out with Cameron Munster and James Maloney. The in-form Cowboys playmaker looks to continue where he left off, and establish himself as a "world-class player".

Meninga spoke to the media regarding the halves selection.

“Michael has his nose in front, to be honest with you. He is the next in line,’’ Meninga said.

“He has played No. 14 (for Australia) and his back-end of the year was terrific. He was the form player of the NRL in the finals.

“Cameron Munster and James Maloney have their claims too. It is a long tournament so all three guys are in the mix.

“We have three great candidates who understand the big game ethos and pressure.

“All our 24 players will play in the qualifying rounds. I will talk to Cameron and some of the leaders and finalize the team in the next 24 hours.’

Morgan ultimately led his side to the Grand Final this year, after they languished in 8th spot after the regular season ended.
