Bulldogs prop David Klemmer is set to request a release from Canterbury and sign a lucrative deal with the Newcastle Knights, according to a report by The Daily Telegraph.

Klemmer held discussions with the Bulldogs chief executive Andrew Hill last week regarding being let go from the final two years of his contract.

“We don’t comment on rumours and speculation involving Dave or any other players," Hill told The Daily Telegraph.

“Dave has been at the Dogs for nearly a decade and is a much-valued member of our club.

“Obviously, we’d like him to be at the club for a lot longer.”

The current NRL anti-poaching laws do not allow Klemmer to negotiate a deal with the Knights until November next year, who are reportedly offering the 24-year-old a four-year deal worth $4.6 million.

Newcastle are keen to beef up their forward group, and after unsuccessfully trying to recruit Broncos front-rowers Tevita Pangai Jr and Matt Lodge, now turn their attention to Klemmer.
