The Penrith Panthers have spoken out on the sacking of coach Anthony Griffin, with club group CEO Brian Fletcherย releasing the following statement on the club website.

“There has been much speculation and rumours about the club and head coach Anthony Griffin over the last few weeks,” Fletcher’s statement reads.

“After discussions with Anthony Griffin it is time to end that speculation. By mutual agreement, the club and Anthony have agreed to part ways, effective immediately.

“Anthony departs the club after much success, having taken the Panthers to the finals in the last two years and leaves the club on track for another finals appearance in 2018.

“We would like to thank Anthony for his service to Panthers and wish him well for the future.”

    • Why the hell would he go back to the scum that showed him the door in the first place. Penrith is toxic under that fat clown Gus.

  1. Ivan Cleary has to much dignity to allow Gould to sack him twice. Penrith will offer him all they have as to retain the young half Cleary then after two and a half seasons into a 5yr contract for Ivan thet like they other two coaches, show him the door only to have his son signed to Penrith for 10 seasons.๐Ÿ’‹๐ŸŽฑ๐ŸŽฏ

  2. To me this just doesn’t make sense. Why sack a coach 4 weeks out from finals when your running 5th on the ladder? Gus gone bonkers

  3. Another Coach blindsided and boned by Gould….youโ€™d have to have rocks in your head to go there and coach under Gould.?

  4. The writing was on the wall long ago. Griffin had lost the faith of the players & most everyone else at the club. Credit where credit is due . Did make the finals the last 2 years & perhaps this year. That’s about where the credit ends . Griffin can’t coach a team to win a premiership.
According to former Penrith players & Broncos players, Griffin’s game plans were simple & ineffective . He took no advise or help from any other coaches & tried to do everything himself.
The players abandoned Griffin’s game plans & just played how they wanted to later in the last two games. The only way they came back to win.
The only question is why they re signed him last year? They may have made the finals the last 2 years, but ran around like headless chickens on the last tackles in finals games that they lost. Not knowing what to do on last tackles & having been given no good game plans in attack.
It is a strange time to sack a coach. However, if the players & other coaches have no faith in the head coach? He can’t survive.
Has anyone else actually watched the teams last 6 weeks of games? Try & tell anyone that they were going to win the premiership this year. The season was really just ebbing sadly away.
