NRL legend Andrew Johns has outlined a shopping list for the Canterbury Bulldogs, after coach Dean Pay said his side needs to sign a star player in order to further the club's development.

Canterbury have let some star talent walk over the past few years on the back of salary cap issues, with their top 30 squad widely regarded as the poorest across the NRL.

Following on from Pay's comments, Johns believes there's one man who should be at the top of the Dogs' list, while also naming two more players who he believes could change the club's future.

"I'd be going after Munster. I think he's the perfect player who you could build a team around, Cameron Munster," Johns told Wide World of Sports' Immortal Behaviour.

"If I had to buy another one or two I'd probably go Victor Radley or Cameron Murray. Both young players on the way up; those two players in particular train really hard and really rip in and that has a great affect on all the players at the club.

"The number one would be Cameron Munster for sure."

The trio will be tough to prize away from their current clubs, as Munster and Radley both have contracts until the end of the 2023 season, while Murray's runs until the end of 2021.

  1. All 3 on very long contracts. Radley and Murray grew up supporting there current clubs and have play rep footy growing up at those clubs doubt that’ll change. The Melbourne Storm is basically Munster team now even with Smith still there. He’s there best attacking player, hes the future of the club and I can’t see the Storm letting him go at all. Bulldogs do need signings but these 3 just aren’t happening. They are better off stealing all the best youngster they can get, who’s contracts expire this year to begin there rebuild. For example there targets should be Troy Dargan, George Fai, Jai Feild, Reece Robson, Blayke Brailey, Manase Fainu, Joe Ofahungue, Cade Cust and Enari Tuala. Obviously you can’t sign them all but getting 3/4 of these guys would be the way to go.

  2. Dream on

If Munster had wanted to go anywhere other than Melbourne then he would at least have had a half hearted look at other offers back in December. He didn’t. That tells you that Munster is a storm man for life.

  3. As if any of these guys will leave where they are now. Munster is probably on a motza that will only increase once smith retires. Radley is a life long rorters fan and uncle Nic will look after him and Murray will get looked after by rusty and doesn’t seem to be the guy who would go to a rebuilding team.

They’re going to have to find an established guy who is jack of his current team or wants to shift location like Klemmer did last year. That and gamble in some young home grown talent and other young talent from elsewhere (like the knights did with Ponga). Either way, it’s going to take a while and it’s going to hurt. But considering all the dodgy crap I’ve seen the dogs do over the past 40 odd years, can’t say I feel too sorry for them.

  4. That’s why the Roosters showed Johns the exit door when he was halves coach at Sydney. Because the clown was making up a shopping list for Newcastle and getting in all the players heads planting Newcastle seeds. Two Roosters halves not surprisingly went to Johnsies Knights with Pearce and Watson, to go with a stack of other Roosters.🔫😎
