South Sydney superstar Sam Burgess has been forced into early retirement, according to The Daily Telegraph.

A chronic shoulder problem means the 30-year old will have to walk away from the game on medical grounds.

An announcement from the Bunnies is reportedly imminent.

Burgess picked up an infection following shoulder surgery a few months ago and reportedly only has 25 per cent bone in one of his shoulders.

He is contracted until 2023 on a deal worth over $1 million a season.

South Sydney will now discuss with the NRL how much of the Englishman's contract will be exempt from their salary cap over the next few years.

Fox Sports revealed on Tuesday that the Rabbitohs were interested in Dragon Tyson Frizell as a replacement for Burgess, while they have also been linked to names like David Fifita and Ryan Matterson.

  1. A very sad day for Souths and all NRL fans in the world to see the end of one of the greatest superstars to have played.
Thank you Sam for the wonderful memories and the pride you showed in the red and green.
Shame it took external forces in the shape of the MRC to make sure you were missing from the semis to the delight of all rooster supporters and players who new a repeat of the only to times you played against them this year led to South victories.
Having a whole thread devoted to you on their chat site is the ultimate sign of respect.
Look forward to your continued involvement with the Pride of the League the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

  2. No matter what side of the fence you are on, put it all aside for a moment because this is a pretty horrible way for one of the best forwards the game has seen to retire and lets respect all that he’s done for the game and his accomplishments. All the best in your future endeavors Sam, hopefully things work out for you in life! Champion player in his prime.

  3. Ahahahahahah Ahahahahahah Ahahahahahah Ahahahahahah Ahahahahahah Ahahahahahah

    Souths are gone.

Look at the nutter TwitOne speaking on behalf of ALL League fans claiming we are all sad. What a load of rubbish from the number one Twit.

Dirty player who is retiring early because he knows Souths are wasting his time and energy week in week out getting smashed around for a team that chokes each year one game short of the grand final.

Good riddance to the dirty player.

  4. Sad day, we are in all sorts now 🤦‍♂️. We need a captain and a new pack leader. Not good news. Need a new signing ASAP!

  5. A big fan of Sam Burgess, best player I’ve seen in the NRL past 6 -7 years.
Souths sitting very pretty with GI and SB freeing up plenty for Latrell Mitchell and David Fifita and enough to spare for Tyson Frizell.
Can see one on here very pleased to see him retire and understandably.

  6. Roosters bash him up so bad in rnd25 the big Pom never fully recovered.
Just watch the replay of that game between the back to back Premiers and the back to back choking Souths and you will see how JWH and his pack belted Burgess into oblivion.

    Souths Gone Ahahahahahah Ahahahahahah Ahahahahahah

  7. BenHudson would one be correct in assuming you are around 14-15 years of age?
Very immature and childish comments to say the least.

  8. Breaking News Thomas Burgess wants out of the Souths dump also, Crowe said the best he could do is buy him a one way ticket to England.

  9. Go to speck savers Rodman, One would be correct in assuming your a Clown. Tedesco will run rings around Burgess every day of the week.

  10. Sam burgess was the best player ive ever seen play for souths fact, all the best sam burgess for the future your a true gentleman on and off the field fact..

  11. Hopefully the dirty player closes his dirty Facebook Flashing account also. Which cost this player his marriage.

Not that it worries him as he is playing the field in Mecico ombre.

  12. Sam and the rest of the south Sydney stain fans have to live with the fact that the bashing that the roosters gave there best player, is the reason he’s been forced into retirement.

  13. maybe the big cat can donate his two AVOs to Souffs trophy room… if any know where all those 20 black & white flags live..

  14. Strong rumours growing for announcements this week Latrelle leaving the stain sombreros for his family’s beloved Souths along with the signing of David Fifita who has made it public is desperate to join his mentor Wayne Bennett who has made him the player he is thus far.
The sookpen is in meltdown like the stain sombrero wombats on here sounding understandably very distressed.

  15. Couldn’t care less really, Very dirty player on the field and the game will be better without him.
Off the field he doesn’t seem to be much better, I wonder how Pheobe was feeling when she saw those photos over the weekend.

  16. Can appreciate the venom shown towards this great champion of champions on here having not yet forgiven him for the bashing sendoff he handed SBW and Minestrone into retirement as last game losers in the 2014 semi.
Not only Sam finished up a winner but victorious the last 2 games against the stain sombreros.

  17. Not a Souths fan but boy did I enjoy seeing this bloke run around.

Good on you Sam and all the best for the future.

  18. Excellent, now clear your locker out and the Transit Lounge Exit doors are wide open. Just follow the footprints of those other 30 players over the past two years Sam. Out you go! Bye bye.
Wonder which 2nd rate replacements will fill the Souths dump.

  19. Strong rumour brewing that Rusty is gearing up for a Souffs relocation to his beloved NZ…. the B&W bunny is in place (check out the jersey)
See ya bro …. written in the Book of Fools

  20. You have got to laugh at this Sam Burgess walking out on His Miss’s, Russell Crowe, his Facebook Account and now Souths. So happy to see this nut graber, hair puller, Head high tackle expert call it a day after the Back2Back Rooster Premiers SMAshed him from pillar to post during that last round match before the semis.

He was so scared to back up the next week against Sydney so in front of the referee he pulls Billy Smiths hair, knowing that he will cop a suspension and avoid playing the mighty Roosters the following week in the semi.
The frightend Souths Pom could of played if he appealed the suspension but he did not even appeal.

Great to see Souths frightened pack Leader leave. Souths have now lost their top four spot for next season with George & Sam Burgess, Sutton, departing and the rumors are loud and clear that hopeless 5/8 Walker wants out also. Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah………….

  21. Wake up to yourself TwitOne. The Sydney Roosters as far as I’m aware are the only club that is proud of the fact we have an Immortal Aboriginal who captain Australia. Captain of our back to back 1974-75 premiership winning team and coached the Roosters over a number of years.

Latrell will one day from the Roosters as did Artie Beetson captain the Roosters and Australia.

  22. Life is so good now the games worst dirtiest tactician, has had a visit from Dr karma.
Looks like that idi0t Shadow is still crying knowing his western suburbs rabbits will mot be getting #22 before there due date. Which is a premiership once every 43 years. Therefore a further wait until 2057 is when the next comp is due.

@ forever stop your crying SHADOWahahahahaha the Goose

  23. TwitOne isn’t it about time you join forces with those 6000 members who have turned their back on Souths with dwindling membership numbers since 2015.

Word is out around Zetland that thousands of Souths members who only purchased the cheapie membership without game day tickets, want a refund. If the refund is not granted, they plan a massive protest by refusing to watch Souths games on TV next season.

  24. Just wondering after Tyson, Latrell and David come to the Bunnies with enough left for another, who might that be?
    Maybe Jai Arrow?

  25. Word is a statue of Sam is already being discussed by the NRL to be placed on front of the SCG where Souths have won more premierships than any other club.
A very fitting gesture to be appreciated by all NRL fans.

  26. He was as hard as nails on the field. Sailed close to the wind though. I remember when SBW returned to the Roosters and first time on the field Burgess ran straight over the top of him! He was a bit of grub but great to watch.
