After just one appearance for the Sharks NRL side, Tony Williams is now set to miss the remainder of the 2017 NRL season after injuring his knee in the Tonga v Fiji game on Saturday night.

Williams was twisted awkwardly in a tackle late in the match which representing Tonga and after doing his best to see out the game was assisted from the field.

Subsequent tests and scans have revealed a torn ACL in his knee, meaning surgery and a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

“He has a torn ACL and will need surgery. He will see a specialist in the next few days to determine the best course of action,” Sharks Physical Performance Manager Andrew Gray explained.

The injury is a bitter blow for Williams who managed to break into the Sharks NRL side in round nine after spending the early part of the season with the Newtown Jets in the Intrust Super Premiership.

Williams scored a strong try in the win over the Tigers in 40-minutes on the field and could have expected more game time in the NRL in the weeks ahead.

In other injury news, Luke Lewis is expected to be named later today in the Sharks 21-man squad to tackle the Dragons in the local derby match on Friday.

Lewis has done everything asked of him at training over the past few weeks and is confident of being 100 percent for the game against St George Illawarra this weekend.

James Segeyaro and Jayson Bukuya, currently out with arm and ankle problems respectively, were in the gym earlier today as they continue their recovery ahead of a potential return in round 14.
