The Titans are a club in crisis. They sit bottom of the NRL table, are suffering a horror injury crisis, and are coachless.
Garth Brennan paid the severe price of his team's horrible run of results and form with his job.
Truthfully, the Titans coach was on a hiding to nothing in 2019 as his stars suffered from a mixture of poor form, injuries or other off-field issues.
I absolutely understand why the Titans made the choice to move Brennan on. Quite frankly they need a new vision, and someone who can come in and give the Titans an identity.
That said, the Titans' issues run far deeper than moving on a young coach who couldn't get the most out of a poor roster.
What's done is done and the Titans are on the search for a new mentor.
The club has stated it will take the time needed to find the right coach. This is good news as there isn't an obvious choice, in-demand option out there.
Whereas the Sharks acted quickly to tie down John Morris, the Titans should learn from the Sharks' poor form and put the required effort in.
There is a line of thinking that the Titans need to find the most experienced option available and appoint them for the rest of the season. Truthfully though, 2019 is long gone and the upcoming decision needs to shape the future of the club well past September, 2019.
In my view, the Titans need to look forward, rather than backwards when appointing their coach.
This needs to be a long term appointment due to the fact the Titans are in desperate need of a rebuild.
This isn't a case of a Wayne Bennett coming in with a top-four roster and delivering a title. This is a TOTAL rebuild.
I wouldn't be looking to a Tim Sheens type, who has enjoyed great success during his tenure however hasn't had NRL success for many years.
So who do the Titans appoint? We take a look at some of the best options below:
Geoff Toovey:
I'm going to slightly contradict myself here in suggesting the old school coaching stylings of Geoff Toovey but he may be the right man for the job.
Toovey's playing style was rough, tough and never give up. The brittle Titans could really use a dose of all three of those right now.
Sacked in farcical circumstances at Manly, Toovey hasn't coached since, which is a real shame.
He had a pretty average Sea Eagles team performing well above themselves. What they lacked in freakish abilities they made up for with passion.
Again, something that the Titans could use in spades.
I would be shocked if Toovey's name wasn't at least in the discussion north of the Tweed.
The Walker Brothers:
If the Titans want to establish an identity and play different footy from the rest of the competition then the Walker brothers are the perfect appointment moving forward.
Those who missed the brilliant 2015 Ipswich Jets season really missed out.
This was INSANE levels of attacking footy backed up by near-impossible levels of fitness.
The Jets were so much fun to watch and very hard to beat. Almost every drop out was a short drop out. Almost every kick-off was a version of an attacking kick.
They put it all on the line and they backed their defence when it didn't come off.
Sadly I don't think the Walkers will be considered for the role as it would be seen as a huge risk. That said, the Titans would become a far more enjoyable side to watch and might gain some traction in a difficult market.
I'd be all over this in terms of entertainment, as risky as it may be.
Kevin Walters:
It seems a simple case of if Walters is available, he's the next Titans coach, but I wouldn't be so sure.
Walters wanted the Broncos gig in a big way but would a gig a hundred kms or so down the highway suffice?
The current QLD coach pushed a star-studded Blues team far closer than they had every right to be in this year's Origin series, but the fact remains he's the first QLD mentor to lose two straight series in over a decade.
He's passionate and has a brilliant footy mind. He has experience coaching the biggest names in the game and looks an early front runner here.
Justin Holbrook:
The current St Helens coach gets linked with every NRL job the second it becomes available, and for good reason.
He has a win percentage of almost 80% in the Super League in England and looks to have a brilliant coaching head on his shoulders.
He's untested at NRL level but otherwise, I don't see any boxes that he doesn't tick.
A former assistant to Trent Robinson, he has served an apprenticeship under one of the game's most successful modern coaches.
A lot to like here.
Jason Demetriou:
Heir apparent to Wayne Bennett, the Rabbitohs assistant coach would be taking a gamble if he were to throw his hat in the ring.
Truthfully I don't see much of a risk in the reverse circumstance as although he is yet to coach at NRL level, he has learned from the literal best.
The plan looks to be to serve under Bennett at the Bunnies until the master coach retires.
I'm not sure he would throw that away for an early shot at the Titans in their current state.
Should be an option though. The Titans may need to sell the club on Demetriou other than the other way around.
Who do you believe will be the best fit as next coach of the Titans? Let us know below.
Out of those you mentioned please only consider Holbrook. Walters is a Broncos bridesmaid and unproven. Walkers are OK in the bush but not a good fit. Toovey is still in love with Manly and Dem will stay with Benny.
