The Cronulla Sharks are looking at luring disgruntled Penrith Panthers star Matt Moylan to the club but may have to give up James Maloney in the process.

The SMH.com.au is reporting that Cronulla are on the verge of signing Moylan to a four-year deal worth $3.6 million should the Panthers grant him a release.

With a late-season injury to five-eighth Tyrone May that is likely to impact the start if the 2018 season, the Panthers though are reluctant to release Moylan unless they are able to get something in return.

Enter James Maloney.

The NSW and Cronulla five-eighth has been vocal about his current salary at the Sharks, with reports that the Sharks would not stand in his way should he be able to find a better deal.

A halves partnership of Maloney and Panthers young gun Nathan Cleary sounds exciting, with the mixture of youth and experience. Cleary is still only 19-years-old and could benefit greatly from having an experience half to learn from.

The Wests Tigers are also reported to be keen on Moylan should he be released but his preference is to play in the halves.

With Luke Brooks, Josh Reynolds and rejuvenated Benji Marshall all jostling for a starting role at the Tigers, it's expected that the Sharks have the inside track over the joint venture club..
