Cody Walker is on the verge of signing a three-year extension with the Souths worth $2.55 million, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The deal will likely make the 29-year old a Rabbitoh for life, however, he is reportedly still drawing interest from two NRL rivals.

The report states the two rivals are offering around $900,000 a year, with the five-eighth entering free agency from November 1.

His manager Matt Rose said they are working towards a deal with the Souths worth around $850,000 a season.

“We are working with Souths about Cody extending (his contract),’’ Rose told The Daily Telegraph.

“It’s a club where Cody loves playing and loves playing under Wayne Bennett. He is comfortable at the club.

“You could say we are working together on a deal that both parties are comfortable with. He would like to finish his career at the club but we still have to work through some things.

“Cody is desperate to win a premiership but things can change. You know what things are like in this world.

“Souths are a great club with a big history and Cody wants to be part of that history.

“The beautiful thing about Cody is that he keeps improving each year. His first 10 rounds this year were scintillating. He was best player in the comp at stages this year.

“But there are some questions we are waiting to be answered. He also has to think about his family, so we will wait and see where we land.

“It would be ideal for everyone to get it done by November 1. These things can to take time. It has to align for everyone.”

  1. I’m just waiting to read all of the negative and nasty comments to be posted to this story. Good luck to Walker, he’s been underpaid for too long. Todd Greenberg has said that he has personally checked ALL club’s salary caps and found that the Rooster’s are clean and do it better than others.

So as a great leader he will share the Rooster’s methods and now every club will not have any worries with their salary caps.

  2. I think $950 is massive overs for him, looks like they are spending the money from
    Sam Burgess “medically retirement” already

  3. Unbelievably ridiculous, over 700k for an individual ball player that refuses to feed his three quarter line.
That made my off season knowing Walker is chewing up that amount of the South Sydney salary cap.
In reality he is probably worth about 350-400k per season. Souths will never win a premiership with Walker as the link man for their backs.
Crowe should go the extra mile and offer Wighton 850-900k than resign the NSW half a game sacked ex-Blues pivot.

  4. If Walker accepts 800 and Wighton turns down 750 does that make Jack a better player?

Walker scored 7 more tries, had 11 more try assists and had 7 more line breaks. He also had more Tackle breaks and offloads.

Wighton had 12 more miss tackles, 14 more errors and more penalties.

I know both players play a different type of game, Walker is an amazing ball runner and Wighton is a tough, hearty five eight but Walker is clearly better. Walker at 800k seems fair-below value but Wighton at 750k seems fair-overs

  5. Walker got sacked from NSW after half a game never to return and because he is a greedy player looking for his own “Glory Glory To Walker” type player and Wighton is a classic team player big Strong, fast and sets up his outside backs.

Wighton is a current NSW and Australian rep, he has played in a grand final, something Walker will never achieve, he has won the Clive Churchill Medal.

Wighton is and will always be, a better 5/8 than Walker. I would even go as far to say Wighton is better than Munster, matter of fact, Wighton and Keary are the best two 5/8s in the World.

  6. Souths should let him test the market, he would be lucky to receive anything beyond 400 thousand.
Walker went missing in the Origin and he went missing in the semifinals.
Overrated because he scores a few tries and performs lots of individual jinking runs that look good but nothing ever comes from those runs.
If he added a passing game he could be good, at his age it is hard to teach old dogs new tricks.
In my opinion he is an overrated flop. Fittler thinks so as well.

  7. MarkWoodClucker.
Wighton may be a good utility player, but how is he the second best 5/8th in the game?
NSW played him at centre & he looks a centre , or fullback really. Doesn’t have the Keary skills.
If he’s one of the best 5/8th’s in the game, it shows how few 5/8th’s have any skills at all.
Quite frankly, after Keary I’d rather have Brown from Parramatta as 5/8th. Then Munster. After them & perhaps Walker, the quality of 5/8th’s in first grade drops away. I think you then look to other up & comers like Cust ,Clune , Burton etc.

  8. Just reading your above post seems like you di not watch many Nrl games EastOfDivide.
In your opinion you are claiming that Wighton is below Cust, Clune and Burton.
Just proves you have been rattled by someone or sonething, to come up with stupidity in its greatest form.

  9. No..just don’t think Wighton is a good 5/8th. He’s a good utility player & runner of the ball. Where’s all the silky skills & great passing, putting others into gaps? I’m yet to see those skills. He’s a created 5/8th , not a natural one. Much the same type of player as Jamie Lyon was. A good player no doubt. Just a better centre.

  10. I Agree EOD, Wighton is a fine player, and did a good job for the Raiders at 6 this year, but he is a centre IMO. I am not sure would have all of the players you have mentioned above him, but I get you point. And for anyone to suggest he is a better 6 than Munster is a laugh to say the least. Munster is all class as a footballer, even if I don’t like the rubbish in his game.

  11. Eels.. Don’t get me wrong. I’d have Wighton as a centre any day.
I’m just suggesting that even the younger guys have better skills as 5/8th’s than he does.

  12. EastOfDivide sorry I can not see your logic. Remember Wighton is a fullback not a centre, he has played two profesional games in the centre for NSW only, not what you claim and has transformed into a dangerous 5/8 getting better every game.

A player does not win the Clive Churchill medal for being a bad 5/8. Wighton has been picked to play for Australia after playing the entire season as a 5/8. Looks like your opinion is way out of order when the Aussie selectors disagree with your assesment of Wighton. Sure Wighton is looked upon as a utility back however it was his 5/8 play all year that won him Aussie selection.
