We learnt a bit more about the competition in 2019 as we watched each game intently in Round 2. Here's the second instalment of five talking points for the season.

Tevita Pangai Jr shows up Cowboys' JT

Jason Taumalolo was the talk up in Queensland after a monstrous Round 1 performance but he was dwarfed by an enthusiastic and powerful display by fellow Tongan destroyer Tevita Pangai Junior. Pangai Jr ran for 110 metres in just over 40 minutes, made six tackle breaks, a line break and produced a bulldozing try. He also made a damaging tackle on Taumalolo which has unfortunately left the Cowboys enforcer out for 6-10 weeks.

Brookvale Oval turf under scrutiny again

Roosters winger Brett Morris has suffered a knee injury that could leave him out of action for a few weeks after awkwardly falling on the pitch in a tackle. The patchy turf has been criticised in the past and it isn't the second time that the veteran winger has injured himself on the Brookvale surface. Rain can't be blamed either when there were chunks of the turf coming out before a heavy downpour came down.

Blake Ferguson has major impact as Parramatta go two from two

It was the Eels' star recruit who got a slow-starting Parramatta back into the game against the Dogs on Sunday and ultimately led to a dominant victory. Ferguson threw his hat back into NSW Blues contention with a whopping 298 metres, two line breaks, two tries and a try assist. The Eels' victory means that they begin the season with two wins from two games for the second time since 1999, with the last time being in 2017 when they made the finals.

Wests Tigers sit in first place for the first time in their history

In the 20th year of the existence of the Wests Tigers, the conclusion of Round 2, 2019 is the first time that the joint venture sits in first place. The Tigers achieved the feat after a comprehensive performance against the Warriors. The Warriors were no match for the home side despite their heavy win over the Bulldogs in Round 1. Not even in 2005 when they won the competition did they spend a week at the top of the ladder, as they didn't even climb higher than fourth.

Rabbitohs flex their muscles again

The South Sydney juggernaut kept their season rolling on with a dominant victory over rivals the Dragons. The Rabbitohs have knocked over their two biggest rivals in the first two matches of the season and have sent out an early threat to the rest of the competition as the new 'team to beat.' Two big displays over two fellow premiership contenders have proven that Souths haven't changed from their 2018 form despite the change of coach, and shown that they could become the new title favourites if they continue this form.
