The North Queensland Cowboys are making strong moves in securing a bright future in Townsville after a mass cleanout of players, with a few young stars having their contracts promoted for 2027.

The club recently farewelled Mason Barber (Perth), John Bateman (Bradford), Scott Drinkwater (Dragons), Matthew Lodge (Leeds) and Sam McIntyre (Warriors) at their final home game of the season in Round 27.

While Murray Taulagi and Viliami Vailea will switch codes to rugby union, and Jaxson Paulo, Wiremu Greig, and Zac Herdegen will also depart the club.

It's given significant space for the Cowboys to promote some exciting talent from their development contracts, with Mason Kira, Xavier Kerrisk and Liam Sutton moving into the club's top 30 for next year, as reported by the League Scene.

Kira was elevated into the NRL's top group of players at the start of 2026, but has solidified his spot as he pushes for an NRL debut in 2027.

The bright Kiwi forward represented the Queensland Maroons in the Under 19s State of Origin in 2024, and has since been plying his trade for the Mackay Cutters in the QLD Cup.

Kerrisk made his NRL debut in Round 12 this season, with nine minutes off the bench after being called upon by coach Todd Payten in the club's win against South Sydney.

The crafty hooker has also been representing the Cutters with six tries in 18 appearances this year.

Meanwhile, Sutton has played four matches in the top grade in 2026, scoring two tries while also recording two try assists in the halves during Rounds 11-14.

The Cowboys will travel to Sydney to face the Cronulla Sharks, receiving a significant bonus with the inclusion of Reuben Cotter, who was successful in downgrading his high tackle charge last weekend.

The two sides will meet at Allianz Stadium at 7:50 pm on Saturday.
