The PNG Chiefs have made a play to lure one of New Zealand's biggest rugby union stars to the rival code, with a potential NRL move emerging after the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

All Blacks five-eighth Damian McKenzie has emerged as a target for the incoming NRL franchise, with the club looking to add international experience and star power ahead of its entry into the competition.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the PNG Chiefs have approached McKenzie's management about a potential switch to rugby league, with a one-year deal being offered to the incumbent All Blacks playmaker.

The move would represent a significant coup for the Papua New Guinea-based franchise as it prepares to join the NRL in 2028, with McKenzie bringing a wealth of international experience and an established reputation at the highest level.

Ironically, McKenzie currently represents the Super Rugby Chiefs, the very club the PNG Chiefs are embroiled in a legal battle with over naming rights.

The 31-year-old has made 83 appearances for the All Blacks and remains a key figure in New Zealand's national setup, having started at five-eighth in its clash against the Wallabies last weekend.

McKenzie is currently contracted to New Zealand Rugby and the Super Rugby Chiefs until 2029, although a clause in his deal reportedly allows him to play overseas in 2028, provided he returns for international duties against the British and Irish Lions in 2029.

That provision could open the door for a one-season stint in rugby league before he returns to the 15-man code.

By the time the Chiefs enter the competition, McKenzie would be 33, but his versatility across fullback and halves, along with his experience and attacking instincts could make him an attractive yet unorthodox option as the franchise looks to establish itself among the NRL's elite.

A deal remains far from certain, with McKenzie's existing commitments to New Zealand Rugby and the All Blacks likely to be central to any discussions surrounding a switch.
