Wests Tigers' Michael Chee Kam has been sentenced to a 12-month good behaviour bond and fined $2000 in a Waverley Local Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to a charge of common assault.

In late 2018, Chee Kam assaulted a ride-share driver in Bondi on Campbell Parade, with the Tigers utility and his brother at the scene of the incident.

The driver - who was working for Ola - drove off after an argument before pulling over, before Chee Kam approached the driver and slapped him in the forehead with an open hand.

Chee Kam went on to tell police he was acting in self-defence because he thought the driver was reaching for the glove box, although the magistrate on Tuesday said the violence was inexcusable.

โ€œPeople must know they can go around NSW without fear of being hit by someone,โ€ magistrate Greg Grogin said.

Chee Kam apologised in a letter to the victim, saying he was "deeply ashamed" by his actions.

  1. As apart of the NRLs new rules surrounding off field behaviour doesnโ€™t this mean he should get suspended. JDB, Dylan Walker and Jarryd Hayne are all facing different charges and not been convicted of anything yet but he is guilty and gets the easy treatment. I know these 3 are facing more serve charges but when does the NRL draw the line in the sand to say thatโ€™s alright and youre suspended. I thought it was no acceptions.
