The last few seasons have seen a number of young prospects sign big money, long-term deals with various NRL clubs. These sorts of deals have made some club hierarchies look like geniuses and other morons.

Take a look below at five clubs that have been vindicated, and others humiliated.

4. Newcastle Knights

When fans hear of young stars and big contracts, the one I am about to discuss is undoubtedly what would immediately spring to mind for most.

The deal I am speaking of is the unprecedented four-year, $600k a season deal signed by Kalyn Ponga. According to Fox Sports, the deal contained heavy incentives with representative clauses, which would see Ponga earn over $3 million when activated.

At the time, Ponga was one of the most sought-after young talents in the history of the game, with as many as seven NRL clubs vying for Ponga's services. Who were all willing to offer three to four-year contracts well in excess of $2 million, staggering numbers for someone who had at the time only played two games of first grade. It is also said that various rugby union and AFL clubs threw their hat in the ring to win Ponga’s services.

The Knights would eventually win the race to his prized signature, after giving Ponga and his family a VIP tour of club's facilities and the best spots in town. Newcastle legend Danny Buderus also reportedly met Ponga and explained the family orientated roots that are steeped within the club, a quality that deeply appealed to Ponga and his tight-knit family.

Fast forward a few years, and you could argue that this is the best money Newcastle have ever spent. With Ponga's signing kick-starting a bumper recruitment drive, as well as it could be easily argued that the money Ponga is earning (even with the representative clauses activated) is not enough for a player of his standing in the game.

The Daily Telegraph has also reported that Newcastle is now keen to tie Ponga down even longer. Only in the second year of a four-year contract, the Knights are said to have opened negotiations on a new deal that would keep him in The Hunter until 2026.

While at the time the mammoth contract was seen as a gamble, Ponga has repaid Newcastle’s faith in spades.

  1. Don’t worry. Manly will get the best out of Sulli. Just like we turned hopeless TRex into an international before going to the dogs to ruin his career. Des has the same Bellamy touch.
