If you like me are already sick of the Gold Coast Titans vs Jarryd Hayne vs Neil Henry affair, itโs probably because it was not that long ago another senior player created the exact same thing.
Letโs call it the Robbie Farah vs Jason Taylor vs Wests Tigers.
Now, the reasons were different, as you could claim Farah was at least having a go on the paddock but the result was the same with a senior player with representative experience creating issues and disharmony within the club. In the end, this results in speculation growing by the day with the only definite thing in sight is that it will end in tears.
I would like to think that the Titans got out of that what everyone else did โ you need to rip the band-aid off, as the Tigers drama lasted multiple seasons and is still not 100% over.
The club still paying most of Farah's salary, fighting to not finish last and their favourite sons playing their last few games before heading to other clubs.
It seems unlikely though that the Titans will address the situation right now, especially with only another two rounds remaining. It would make more sense to leave things as they are and then during the post-season โreviewโ make their changes.
Speculation is rife that Neil Henry will go, and if that is the case โ let him go so he can move on and the club can get sorted ready for pre-season 2018. I would put forward to the Titans that as Hayne will be gone at the end of 2018, you are only going to get another season out of him like you have seen the past 18 months, so punt him.
The club would be a million dollars behind on the salary cap but have the core group that will be there in 2019 and use that time to find best strategies and positions for them. They can then identify what gaps need filling and with the money available for season 2019, recruit accordingly. The Titans will have another ordinary season with Hayne there โ he has to go.
There have been numerous polls and stories about the other NRL clubs and that there would be no option for Hayne should he move on, but I reckon there is one club that might be able to make it work โ Canberra Raiders.
Jack Wighton is not setting the world on fire as the fullback, is prone to errors and has poor reads in defence. He also does not seem to off much in attack as the third man play your quality fullbacks have these days like Darius Boyd, James Tedesco and Billy Slater (even the new breed like Clint Gutherson and Tom Trbojevic).
Taking Hayne away from the Glitter Strip and not back to Sydney would isolate him, and with Ricky at the helm, I reckon he might be able to pull Jarrydโs head back to where it needs to be. I donโt think it would be worse than what heโs currently got, and if that massive Raiders pack started offloading some more, it would provide Hayne plenty of opportunities. The Titans would have to pay most his wage (like Wests Tigers do for Farah this year), but he would be gone and that is the end game.
My big question would be though โ Farah was 2015, Hayne is 2017, who might be the next 30-year-old player to create a mess at his club in 2019 and give us this crap this all over again?
