The New Zealand Warriors have confirmed star dummy half Wayde Egan won't be going anywhere for the short-term future, but risk losing him at the end of the 2028 NRL season after agreeing to a one-year contract extension.

Dummy half is constantly one of the most under resourced areas in the competition, and the Warriors were understandably desperate to retain Egan - who was in the top couple of hookers in the game during 2026 - before the November 1 deadline when he could have begun negotiating with rival teams.

The hooker's one-year extension means the Auckland-based club, who will also lose Samuel Healey at the end of 2027, is going to be right back in the same spot in 12 months, aiming to retain Egan before November 1.

The Lithgow-born 29-year-old played the first 29 games of his career for the Penrith Panthers in 2018 and 2019. He has been a stalwart of the Warriors ever since, playing 146 games for the club since joining in 2020.

Finals pending, he could go past the 200-game barrier in 2027 for his career. Egan has become one of the most dependable figures in the competition.

“Wayde has been a huge asset for us and is well established as one of the best hookers in the competition,” Warriors general manager of pathways, recruitment and development Andrew McFadden said of his re-signing.

“He loves being with Warriors while his experience is invaluable helping the next generation of hookers coming through our pathways system.”

The 2026 Dally M Hooker of the Year, who is still waiting for a representative debut with the NSW Blues, will become the most capped Australian at the Warriors across the next two seasons if he can play 43 games, with the record currently held by Jacob Lillyman on 188.

Andrew Webster said the club's entire style of play is built around Egan.

“Wayde is brilliant, an elite hooker who's so smart in his all-round game and a player who provides so much in every respect around the club,” Webster said.

“We've got a style of play we put around him so he can show his talent. He's exceptional and a player we're so happy to see staying at the club.”
