The Cronulla Sharks have been forced to issue another statement after one of their players was issued with a court appearance for possession of an illegal substance.

Jesse Savage, an under 20s NYC player has been stood down by the club until further notice and the matter has been referred to the NRL integrity unit.

This follows the recent news of Sharks chairman Damien Keogh stepping down from his role after he was charged with possessing a prohibited drug and issued with a future court attendance notice in June.

The NRL is dealing with a number of high-profile drug-related incidents of late, with Roosters player Shaun Kenny-Dowall stood down by his club after being caught by police with cocaine and Kiwis duo Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor being dropped from international duties, including this year's World Cup, after the pair were caught buying cocaine following the Anzac Test.
