Sydney Roosters chairman Nick Politis has denied the club have already signed Sonny Bill Williams.

Speaking to Fox Sports, Politis said he had no idea where the rumours had come from and as far as he was aware, Williams was contracted to rugby union.

“It’s news to me,” Politis said.

“As far as I’m aware he’s contracted to play rugby union in New Zealand.

“We love Sonny and we’ll always love Sonny. But I’m not sure where this has come from.”

The rumour mill went into overdrive yesterday with reports from former rooster Jimmy Smith that Williams was all but a done deal to sign with the Roosters before the June 30 deadline.

“The mail is good. From what I understand the deal is done,” Smith said on Big Sports Breakfast radio show.

“It will be a short stint at the end of the Super Rugby season.

“They (the Roosters) would have to register the contract before June 30. They have space in the cap.”

  1. A little birdie told me the Chooksters are on the verge of signing Sonny Bill Williams. Nick Politis is keeping this one quite this time. The last time something like this got leaked (Bennett coaching the Roosters) the person involved (Bennett) spat the dummy and signed with Saint Illawarra instead. So everybody please keep this rumour to ourselves thankyou.

    • Bennett didn’t spit the dummy, he just got some brown paper bags from mining magnate Talbot to stay at the Broncos.

  2. What a effing disgrace if this money grubber returns to the bottomless pit of money at the rorters. NRL don’t even try to hide their bias now.
