The biggest signing never involved a new recruit. Kalyn Ponga's extension until 2030 ended constant speculation about his future and confirmed the club's commitment to him as its long-term fullback. Combined with Dylan Brown's long-term arrival, Newcastle now boasts one of the competition's most settled and exciting spines.
Retaining Dylan Lucas was equally significant. Before suffering a devastating ankle dislocation, Lucas had elevated himself into State of Origin and was emerging as a genuine Kangaroos contender.
