Retired Cowboys great Johnathan Thurston says the 2015 premiership triumph over the Brisbane Broncos was the greatest moment of his career.

North Queensland won their inaugural NRL title after Thurston scored a crucial field goal, and the star halfback was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal thereafter.

“2005 was the first time the Cowboys had made a Grand Final then I had to wait another 10 years before I experienced that again,” Thurston told SEN Afternoons.

“2015, no doubt, was my greatest memory on a rugby league field.

“To be a part of the first ever winning premiership for the Cowboys was something that I’ll never forget.

“We took the trophy far and wide throughout North Queensland, getting to all those different communities.

“North Queensland had been battered with a lot of natural disasters over the years from droughts to cyclones, so to take the trophy all around North Queensland and to see the smiles that it brought on people’s faces was something I’ll never forget.”

Thurston hung up the boots at the end of last season after 323 first grade NRL appearances with four Dally M Medals to his name.
