Dolphins star Isaiya Katoa has opened up on the Dolphins making their first finals appearance since the club came into the competition in 2023.

“Now that we are in a position that we know we are going to play finals, it's about setting up what's going to be helpful for us moving forward," he said.

Katoa opened up about his time away with his injury and the confidence he had in the Redcliffe side.

“It's a credit to our coaching staff but also our playing group, having that next man up mentality," he added.

“For the most part of that period, they held their hands up really well… and those individuals that not only came through that period but the origin period as well”.

The halfback talked about what was important for him leading into the finals with the Dolphins.

“I think what's really important for myself is just around controlling the team and leading our mindset," Katoa revealed.

Katoa praised his team and their ability to make his job easier; he said: “For me, I'm spoilt for choice; I just need to nail the kick.

“It's probably just mixing it up, giving other guys looks at getting up there and contesting for the ball”.

The inclusion of Daniel Rich coming in to serve as a kicking specialist for the Redcliffe Dolphins has been great for the Dolphins number seven. The former AFL player comes in once a week to work with the squad.

“He's an awesome kicking coach…we will go through little things, and sometimes it's just a refresh," Katoa said.

“The biggest thing I've taken away from him is momentum and what that does for your kick…for me, that is something I'm continuously working on”.

As the Dolphins have previously missed out on finals, Katoa opened up about why this year is different for the club.

“I feel like as a group and as a team we are a bit more level-headed this year…we understand we need to take it week by week and nothing is more important than the week ahead," he revealed.

Katoa briefly touched on the departure of Kodi Nikorima and savouring those moments with him this season.

“It's a massive driving factor for us, not just Kodi… for us it's just about enjoying the rest of the year and making the most of the players we got," the halfback said.

With the inclusion of English international George Williams, the Dolphins star relayed his role in the halves and the potential combination for next season.

“The type of player I am, I'm not the type to want all the glory…I'm sure me and George will find a bit of a balance over the preseason," he said.

“He's a quality player, and he's a very experienced player as well, so I know for me it actually helps my game… for me, I think it will take a bit of pressure off me as well”.
