South Sydney captain Greg Inglis has made a successful return to the field during the Rabbitohs 22-18 trial win over St George Illawarra but the good news was somewhat soured with an injury to Alex Johnston.

Inglis only played less than 20 minutes in the trial match before he was subbed out of the match but Rabbitohs coach Anthony Siebold would have been delighted to see his star playing running freely in the short stint.

The news is not so good for fullback Johnston though after receiving a rub injury.

Johnston was hit hard in a tackle by new Dragons recruit James Graham and was immediately tended to by a trainer. Johnston left the field and didn't return.

Johnston was seen receiving treatment for the injury later in the Rabbitohs sheds and will now go for scans to assess the extent of the injury.

It was expected that Johnston would retain the fullback position this season, despite Inglis returning with Inglis likely to play in the centres this season.

Siebold will now likely need to rethink that plan with the season kicking off in less than two weeks.
