Dear Mr Boyd,

I completely understand your situation. If I was being paid $1.6 million to play footy for two years, I would do it in a heartbeat. You have every right to play out your contract, and choose when you retire. But it's not about money anymore.

It's about legacy.

Your old teammate, the great Darren Lockyer, realised that. Yes, Lockyer was not the same player he was 5 years prior, but his 2011 season was on par with his performance from 2010. He had the opportunity to take the money on offer and move to Widnes in England. But he decided that it was best for his legacy that he retire a Bronco. And he did by giving the rugby league world one of the greatest final play in history.

This past week in America, we've seen another player walk away from money, albeit for a different reason. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck walked away from $56 million, yes you did read that right, due to his mental health. He simply lost all love for the game after dealing with a multitude of injuries. But to walk away from that kind of money shows strength and dedication to yourself and your family.

Now back to you, Mr Boyd. Can you tell you've regressed? You currently have 2 tries this season, which is on track for the worst year in your career (which includes 2014 and 2015 when you only played a combined 32 games). I understand tries aren't everything, but your defence has regressed to a point where it is nonexistent. It forced Anthony Siebold to move you to five-eighth, where you have done a wonderful job doing everything someone in that position should not due- being passive, not engaging the line, and not being a kicker.

So, Darius, the equation is simple. You can take the money you are entitled to. But with Dearden and O'Sullivan showing promise, this will likely see you dropped to reserve grade, regardless of how much you're being paid or if you're the captain.

Or you can retire. Protect your legacy. And do what the captain should do- what's best for the team. The money freed up by you would go a long way to re-signing Corey Oates and David Fifita Jr. And if you want the money then I'm sure something would be organised. Maybe a coaching deal worth 400k a year over 4 years.

Mr Boyd, the choice is yours. Do what you feel is best for you, your family, and your Broncos. And hope that it's right.

  1. The Broncos are going to have to make him a post retirement job offer if they are to get him to go. Best thing Seibs could do would be put him in QLD cup immediately. A couple of weeks there would be a wake up call.

  2. Oh sTupidONE, the discussion is about Boyd and his relationship with Uncle ‘Zimmer Frame’ Benny.
What’s Crighton got to do with any of this?
Is the alcohol kicking or do you have ADD? I suspect both.
The Circus is in town, they’re looking for a clown, you’re a shoe in. Put ZT down as a reference.

  3. Unca Siebs is reported as saying elsewhere that there are two main reasons why Darius isn’t retiring :-

    1) He hasn’t asked him too
    2) He doesn’t know who else to play in his position

Whilst he does go on to say that Darius brings great leadership values to the team, these comments do seem rather lame to me. Sounds like Seibold isn’t really in control of that team or its direction.

  4. I’m guessing Cadet Coach Anthony has been told to pull his head in by the senior Donkeys at the club.
Fancy saying all those awful things about Benny’s ‘love child’

  5. I hear the roosters are looking at him to replace past it Friend after Venerials hasn’t shown anything.
Could go alright their at 9.

  6. Just a note for EdwardWoodWood1 … my old man died recently of Alzheimer’s so try and pick another affliction … but be careful, age comes to us all if we’re lucky.

Where did you hear this, at the Club with no bar…??
I’ve asked you eight, you’ve not answered one…
    Attention Deficit Disorder…
    … I think it’s the alcohol…
When I I finish my “30,000 Members, 90,000 Teeth” which, at this rate, will make ‘Lord of the Rings’ (Stephanie can relate in more ways than one) look like a coffee table mag.
I’ve a couple of new titles I’m working on… ‘A Bar, too far away’ featuring the usual loveable characters having their AA meetings in pubs. The trouble they play up and subsequently get barred every place they drink at… It’s starts in Souffs homeland….. More on this soon

  8. Chookstirfry if you cant see the reference to Crighton point I was making you are as dumb as your girlfriend Edsybil alias.
There is already a book started on you in the Souths grubbiest forum (all five of you)
Do something about your chronic inferiority complex.

  9. Chookstirfry I also recall your prediction the roosters 20+ over souths R1.
I can understand your obsession with Wayne Bennett.
Your coach Mr Potato Head was clueless that game like he is now.

  10. I’ve had a look at your scribble TwistedONE, it’s very ordinary. You do struggle to stay on task, I’d say you were a real dope at school…. and, you haven’t progressed.
When, or if, you post something sensible, I’ll engage in discussion, till such time go away, you loser.

  11. Chookstirfry talk about calling the kettle black , you keep repeating the same point constantly with nothing new to add.
We must have read your 30 000 gibberish at least 20 times on ZT by now.
Likewise , offer something sensible and you also might be responded to with same.

  12. If the Broncos want Darius Boyd to retire, I think he will. Being to team captain has responsibilities and he doesn’t seem to be the type of person who would want to hold back a young player from playing first grade. I think the Broncos would give him some kind of reimbursement to make up for early retirement as well.
