Brisbane and Queensland forward Joe Ofahengaue has been ruled out of the Broncos' clash with Gold Coast on Saturday with a knee laceration that could out him for two to four weeks.

The State of Origin debutant performed strongly in what is arguably the biggest game in the rugby calendar.

The Broncos forward impressed during his Origin debut, and ran for almost 100 metres in just over 30 minutes off the bench.

Ofahengaue's night was ended early as an errant stud gashed just below his right knee.

“It is a really strange injury – it is not a common rugby league injury to get a deep laceration on a patella,” Broncos’ Head of Performance Paul Devlin told the club's website this afternoon.

“They got him straight into hospital to minimise the infection.

“Dr Peter Meyers cleaned out the wound and stitched it up to stop anything else getting in there.

“Everything seems to be working fine and there doesn't seem to be any underlying problems that would keep him out for a long time.

“He is on intravenous antibiotics aimed at minimising as much as we can any possible infection.

“He won't be available this week but we really won’t know until that wound heals up and we can check the function around the area.

“He could be back next week in the best-case scenario, so we are positive about it, or it could be a number of weeks after that.”
