After their 58-0 drubbing in the elimination final against the Eels on Sunday, many fans and media pundits called for Broncos skipper Darius Boyd to hang up the boots.

The under-pressure skipper has been in the spotlight all season long after a well below par year for the Broncos, but the 317-game veteran insists he has no plans to retire and fully expects to be playing next season.

"I'm definitely playing on next year," he told The Courier-Mail.

"I need to get better myself. I had a change of positions (from fullback to five-eighth this year), so I think another pre-season there (at pivot) can help.

"Having a pre-season at five-eighth would be good. The last 10 weeks with me and 'Turps' (Jake Turpin) as makeshift halves, we managed to get into finals."

Boyd is contracted at Red Hill until the end of next year and has a clause in his contract that he must play a minimum of 15 games in 2020 to trigger a further 12-month extension for 2021.

When asked whether he would consider finishing off his career in the centres to allow 18-year-old halfback Tom Dearden to resume in the No.7 jersey, Boyd was supportive of the idea.

"I'll talk about that next year, but I've always been a team guy and I will play wherever.

"Whatever happens next year, I'm ready to go."

  1. Brisbane just have to admit it , that they f.cked up in signing Seibold, especially for 5 years, any other coach would not have got that result, no way, I know Bennett got beat by Stgeorge Illawarra last year, just to get that in before idiot will77 butts in, but that level of defeat should never happen in this day and age and Brisbane need to bite the bullet and release him NOW.

Thank god he was taken off Souths books , that’s all i can say.

  2. He should play in reserve grade next year otherwise the centres or wing.

I know it wouldn’t happened but the Broncos should try swap McCullogh or Boyd for Ash Taylor, If you have to throw in Shibaski do it.

Get Milford to play Fullback, Deardon at 6, Taylor 7 and Turpin at 9. The backline is made up of Oates, Bird, Staggs and Issako. All the players are young and fresh. Taylor has played with all the young broncos coming through the ranks. Turpin was excellent at hooker, Milford will have a good offseason to get fitter. That’s the way forward.

The titans may take Boyd or McCullogh as good leaders for their team. And if they take there 1 year deal they get away from Taylor and also get Shibaski, that might be enough to do it.

  3. Boyd hasn’t played well since he was at the Dragons imo. Couldn’t quite understand why the Broncos signed him up to such a big contract. This is not meant to be a slight on Queenslanders but I really think they have always put this guy on a pedestal just because he was the beneficiary of playing outside Inglis for years in origin.
Anyway why would he retire.. He’s on huge coin and I don’t think he’s ever shown he gives two s#!7s what anybody thinks about him.

  4. To all those saying he should retire. Would you give up 700k a season, “for the good of the team”. See if Milford wants to retire, he’s on 1mill and is pathetic.

  5. Leagueguru, yes ur right Milford hasn’t been great but I think everyone will agree that he’s offering a lot for on the field then wha Boyd is.

For a player like Boyd to play many seasons with the Broncos then leave for abit and come back again…. a little part of him must care for the club.
He’s gotta show that side, swallow his pride and admit he just hasn’t got it anymore, and retire that way, Brisbane can look at bringing in someone young to play in the halves that will actually have a go.

And this is coming from someone who dislikes the Broncos with a passion!!

  6. “I’ll talk about that next year, but I’ve always been a team guy and I will play wherever” ……… as long as it doesn’t affect my pay packet, I will play anywhere. I know in my heart I am past it but don’t talk to me about retirement, I want to do my best for my bank manager (sorry team, I mean’t team). I will work hard in the off season, I won’t have too many lattes and I will tell everyone else what they should be doing. I will play 15 games next year then see if I can’t pick up a little injury so that I can stay home and rest up but be assured, I will be thinking about the team and what is best for them.

  7. Far out, how delusional can someone be? You playing at 6 had nothing to do with us making the finals. Hang them up or finish your career in QLD cup.

  8. Leave the poor guy alone 28 games for Queensland, 23 for Australia and has won premierships. He might be at a bad stage at the moment but he can overcome it I don’t know why everybody is complaining when u got a player named Darius awesome Boyd.
If I was him I would retire now and go out a legend of rugby league and a future immortal.
Take me down I’ve seen it all Darius,
    My hero
