South Sydney Rabbitohs For the third time in his career, Rabbitohs forward Sam Burgess has been named the best and fairest player for South Sydney. By winning his third George Piggins Medal, Burgess is now level with teammate and back row partner John Sutton who has also won the prestigious award on three occasions in 2009, 2012 and 2013. The medal marks Burgess’ 12th Rabbitohs award since making his debut for the Club in 2010. Taumalolo, 24, won the club’s highest individual honour ahead of teammate Michael Morgan following another stellar season, where he became the first forward in the NRL to pass 5,000 running metres for the season. The award has capped an outstanding two years for the young tyro, who was last year jointly named – alongside Melbourne’s Cooper Cronk – the best player in the game. The 2012 Player of the Year had surgery after tearing the ACL in his knee against the Eels in round 21. But missing the final five games of the season didn’t make any difference to the Paul Morgan Medal count, after McCullough blew the opposition away in the first six rounds of the season. Campbell-Gillard played every game for the Panthers in 2017 - 26 in total - and averaged 130 running metres and 27 tackles per game. The 24-year-old was selected to represent the NSW City Origin side, was nominated for Dally M Prop of the Year and won the Dally M Interchange Player of the Year title. This is the second time Cordner has claimed the Club’s most prized award, with the 25-year-old previously receiving the Medal in 2015. He’s the first backline player to receive the accolade since club great Manu Vatuvei in 2010 while the only other backs recognised have been Francis Meli (2003), Stacey Jones (1997) and Tea Ropati (1995). The Grafton junior polled 49 votes, which was compiled on a 3-2-1 basis after each match, from the three-man coaching staff and playing group. Don finished two points clear of hooker Nathan Peats who also had a strong season. The award caps off a stellar season for the 29-year-old who earned his first Country Origin jersey and also topped the try-scorer list for the club, with 12 four-pointers in his 20 appearances. Paulo finished the season on 23 votes and secured the win in round 25, where he polled three votes against the Newcastle Knights to take a one vote lead over rookie Nick Cotric. Jack Wighton polled three votes with a man of the match performance in round 26 against the Storm, but it wasn’t enough to run down Paulo or Cotric in the final tally. Nick Cotric was awarded for an outstanding debut season in the NRL as he took home the club’s rookie of the year award after playing all 24 matches in his debut season, which was a remarkable achievement at the age of 18. The NSW Origin representative, was his usual model of consistency, winning seven Players' Player Awards. He led from the front on the field, averaging 12 runs, 105 metres gained and 32 tackles per game. The Rookie of the Year Award went to outstanding newcomer Marcelo Montoya. The local junior who grew up playing for the Bankstown Bulls, made his NRL debut in Round Three against the Warriors and ended the season as the team's leading try scorer with twelve. Barnett also won the Gladiator of the Year award, while young forward Daniel Saifiti was named the Players’ Player and Rory Kostjasyn the Club Person of the Year. Taylor took out the top award as one of five finalists that included captain Aaron Woods, David Nofoaluma, Kevin Naiqama and James Tedesco. The 27-year-old, who recently extended his contract at Wests Tigers until the end of 2020, also took out the Members’ Player of the Year award following a superb season.
