Jamie Humphreys could be handed an opportunity to earn a new deal at the South Sydney Rabbitohs after halfback Ashton Ward suffered a hamstring injury on Saturday night.
Ward appeared to hurt himself while attempting a conversion in the first half, walking away from the kick limping before being seen icing his hamstring on the sideline. He failed to return for the remainder of the match.
Jayden Sullivan was brought on at halfback in Ward's absence, rather than Humphreys, although the former Manly utility could still be recalled if Ward is ruled out for an extended period.
Humphreys joined the Rabbitohs in 2025 but has since fallen out of favour in Wayne Bennett's side, leaving his future at the club uncertain.
He has only played 14 games this season, starting with six games at halfback before falling to the interchange and reserves.
The 24-year-old was all but confirmed to join the Perth Bears in 2027 after his South Sydney contract expires at the end of the season. However, that deal ultimately fell through, leaving Humphreys without a confirmed home for next season.
The Sydney Morning Herald is now reporting that Humphreys is on the verge of re-signing with South Sydney, despite two other Sydney clubs also showing interest in the halfback.
With Ward potentially sidelined for multiple weeks, Humphreys could be presented with a crucial opportunity to prove himself to Bennett and push his case for an extension at the Rabbitohs.
After spending much of the season on the outer, Ward's injury could give Humphreys the opening he needs to revive his South Sydney career.
