NRL analyst Jimmy Smith believes there's a chance South Sydney superstar Greg Inglis has played his last game of rugby league.

Inglis was given leave from the Rabbitohs for the next seven days on Tuesday, as a number of injuries have gotten the better of him this year.

The Maroons and Kangaroos great is also battling some off-field issues, as he continues to battle with the desire to play in the NRL.

Smith joined Bill and Boz on Tuesday night to discuss Inglis' future plans, and believes that while there's a good chance he does return to the field, there is a possibility he doesn't.

“The South Sydney Rabbitohs have given Greg Inglis a chance to get away, up until Monday next week to work out what he wants to do,” Smith said.

“There is the real possibility that Greg Inglis has played his last game in the National Rugby League. Now if Greg comes back and says to (Souths coach) Wayne Bennett: ‘Hey, I’m ready to go and I want to go and I’m prepared to do the hard work to assist this team’ then they’ll be accommodating of that for sure.

“We’ve got to remember he’s got another year to run on his contract — last year of rep footy but next year he’s going to play just for the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

“From what I understand, they’ve also lined up alternate employment if Greg decides that it’s become a bit too hard.

“His injuries are significant, he’s achieved so much in the game, he’s a revered figure in the game of rugby league. You could argue that he’s in the best 13 of Australian Kangaroos history.

“He might say what, the injuries are too much, the stress that I’m going through is too much. The result of that is that I want to step away from the game.

“If that is the case then South Sydney have in place a position, I presume it’s with their Souths Cares arm, which is their charity arm.

“I presume it’s for a significant amount of money over an extended period of time that allows him to maybe compensate or even over-compensate what he is giving up, which is from what we understand is around about a million dollars a year for that 2020 contract.”

  3. I believe while he is on walk-about for a week he should try and climb Ayres Rock before they close it up for ever. Yourve got to October 26 and the chain comes down. He has done everything else there has to be done, Played for Australia, REPRESENTED nsw in QUEENSLAND colours. Won premierships.

    But in realaity I can’t see him playing on. Retire today and let people remember you as one of the most destructive runners to lace up a pair of boots.🐇🥄

Their saying he has arthrites in his shoulder and it obviously won’t come good, sad to see him go, but his body is giving out by the looks of things, needs to be medically retired so Souths can use his money, very sad it has come to this and hope i am wrong, without a fit Inglis I doubt we can win the comp.
