Top 8 Predictions: revised

Three weeks ago we looked at the final six rounds of the NRL Telstra Premiership season, and tried our hand at the ladder predictor to see which eight teams would battle it out in the finals.

Three rounds on from our last predictions and with just three games to go, we've decided to update our predictions and form a new final top 8.

Surprisingly just the Cowboys stayed in the same position from the last ladder, with the Titans dropping out to make way for the Warriors.

8th - New Zealand Warriors, 28pts

  • Cowboys (A) - L
  • Tigers (H) - W
  • Eels (H) - W

A huge win in Round 25 against the Tigers will propel the Warriors into eighth position. When New Zealand play their best football they're hard to stop, and if they're able to do that over the next three weeks then a finals berth awaits the Warriors.

7th - Brisbane Broncos, 30pts

  • Bulldogs (H) - L
  • Storm (A) - L
  • Roosters (H) - W

Strong performances over the past two weeks from Brisbane haven't made up for their poor past two months, as they'll limp into the finals in 7th position. The Bulldogs and Storm are simply playing too well for the Broncos at the moment, and Wayne Bennett's men will have to flick the switch soon if they're to make a deep finals run.

6th - Penrith Panthers, 32pts

  • Tigers (H) - W
  • Titans (A) - W
  • Sea Eagles (H) - W

After squeezing into eighth in our original predictions, the Panthers have been in strong form and shouldn't drop a game for the rest of the season. Games against Wests and Gold Coast are massive as both sides are in the finals race, but an in-form Penrith outfit will have no problems in achieving a home final.

5th - North Queensland Cowboys, 32pts

  • Warriors (H) - W
  • Bulldogs (A) - L
  • Titans (H) - W

Three losses in a row have derailed North Queensland's top four hopes, although the Cowboys are still the most dangerous team outside the top four. A win against the Warriors this week will help them on their way to an elimination final showdown with the New Zealand club in the opening week of the finals, and if the Cowboys win that, the ball could start to roll for a deep finals push.

4th - Canterbury Bulldogs, 38pts

  • Broncos (A) - W
  • Cowboys (H) - W
  • Rabbitohs (H) - W

Massive games against Brisbane and North Queensland are on the horizon for the Bulldogs, but as the most impressive team out of that trio over the past month, it'll be Canterbury that fancy themselves to win both games. A fourth placed finish would likely see them travel to Melbourne in the first week of the finals, with the Dogs the only side to win away at AAMI Park all season.

3rd - Canberra Raiders, 39pts

  • Eels (H) - W
  • Sea Eagles (A) - W
  • Tigers (A) - W

The form team of the competition should have no problems in their final three games, and the Raiders should cruise into the finals on a 10-game winning streak. Wins over Cronulla and Melbourne in recent weeks see Canberra become the second team in 30 years to beat the ladder leading teams in consecutive weeks, and they'll enter the finals series as one of the teams to beat.

2nd - Cronulla Sharks, 41pts

  • Rabbitohs (A) - W
  • Roosters (H) - W
  • Storm (A) - L

Two losses in a row have seen the Sharks slip into second position, a spot they'll likely finish in. The Round 26 game against the Storm at AAMI Park will decide the minor premiership, although the home side should be too strong for Cronulla in that one. They'll enter September as one of the competition's best teams, so could this be the year the Sharks finally break their premiership duck?

1st - Melbourne Storm, 44pts

  • Sea Eagles (A) - W
  • Broncos (H) - W
  • Sharks (H) - W

No losses in their final three matches will see the Melbourne Storm crowned the minor premiers. Craig Bellamy's side knows that means nothing though, and they'll be hungry to take advantage of their top spot finish.

Melbourne, Cronulla and Canberra are the three teams the remaining finalists will be chasing, with all three teams believing they have a real shot at premiership glory.
