The Canberra Raiders have officially announced the signing of former Newcastle Knights player Joseph Tapine, on a new four year contract effective immediately.

Tapine, 21, joined his new Raiders team mates at Raiders HQ for the first time today, after receiving a release from the final year of his contract with the Newcastle Knights earlier this week.

Tapine said he was ready to tackle the challenge of working his way into the Raiders NRL team and said he was impressed with what he saw in the Raiders trial match last weekend.

“I’m really excited to be here. It’s a new chapter in my life and I’m just looking forward to getting out there with the boys,” Tapine said. “I saw the team play last week and it’s a deadly team. I saw the skills and fitness and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”

Tapine said he’s looking forward to working under the experience of Coach Ricky Stuart, while he said the transition would be made easier with the fact he had two former teammates at the Raiders.

“I’m definitely keen to work with Ricky. I’ve heard good things about him and I have a couple of mates who play here who have given him big raps,” he said.  “Adam Clydsdale is my former roommate and I’m good friends with Joey Leilua so it will be great for me to have some players I know well here.”

  1. not too sure if this signing is good or not time will tell not really sure about this player but hes been in th news a bit lately over signngs raiders could be a top arkhorse this season ..believe that

  2. Anybody know the amount he signed on? I’ve heard a really high number (for four years) and I am questioning it abit.

  3. About time but still a sad affair really @belive that if you do work at the NRL which I have strong doubts about I have to say that you all suck at your job.

    • @jacks don’t really care what you doubt I know the truth thats all that matters so stick to the story and forget what you doubt about me …believe that

  4. Surely there are many other front rowers we could’ve snatched for 400k a year, never really heard about this kid before but Ricky must see something in him that others dont for that type of coin.

    • This signing will come from Mick Crawley who coached him in the NYC and Peter Mullholand who originally bought Tapine to Newcastle both those 2 have huge wraps on him but only time will tell if he actually lives up to the expectations

  5. With the salary cap going up and ever expanding 3rd party deals. $400,000 might just be about to become the average wage of nrl players on the up. Remember when Chris sandow signed with parramatta for $550,000 a year and that was a huge amount reserved for the likes of Cronk and Thurston. Now if you can get a good half for around $500,000 you’re a master negotiator.

  6. a bit of a gamble, but i do think he can make an impact off the bench for the raiders he has a strong running game and good offload from the few games i have seen him play, weather he can play good consistent footy he may actually turn around to be worth that much, only time we tell.

  7. He’s a back rower not a prop!! So unless he absolutely kills it… 400k+ is a heap for a kid to be on the bench or in reggies.
He like many others before him… Has all the talent, the size, the speed to be amazing!! But lazy and none interested at times… Although that could of been because of the coach and team he was in.

I hope he goes well as a footy fan!!
As a knights fan I hope he doesn’t Lol.

    • Have you seen Leilua lately? We seem to have the knack of changing once lazy people and turning them into machines! So if Tapine was once lazy, he wont be any more…I mean no disrespect to Knights fitness staff, I’m just saying Raiders training staff have the ability to change that lazy attitude in a player.

      • Don’t even get me started on that philippo Sheman!!

U make a good point (in ur views) Tho Leilua was is the best shape of he’s career at Newcastle in 2013 but must if eaten plenty with the somoan crew and he came back from that tour and a rest for pre season of 2014 at 120kg when he was at 108kg at the end of 2013. Then when he was told to work hard he had a cry and left.
Canberra have a habit of taking Newcastle players…
        Dane Tilse
        Joel Edwards
        Joey Leilua
        Pangai Jr
        Kyle O’Donnell
        Adam Clydesdale
        Joseph Tapine
History shows u haven’t done well buying knights players really!!
Although u have helped Newcastle to a wooden spoon Lol.

  8. Raiders are a team on the up. He is going to have to start earning that paycheck. Smart move to Leave Newcastle for a chance at finals and more money

    • Actually he is getting 135k this year!! as that is the amount of the contract he had signed with Newcastle.
From 2017 he is getting 475k for 3yrs… Lucky kid!
