The Brisbane Broncos are set to announce Anthony Seibold as the successor to Wayne Bennett.

According to Fairfax Media, the Broncos have yet to offer Seibold a formal agreement but have signalled they want the South Sydney coach to replace Wayne Bennett in 2020.

The Broncos have recently concluded their interview process to find a successor to Bennett with Kevin Walters, Michael Maguire and current Brisbane assistant Jason Demetriou all interviewed along with Seibold.

The Rabbitohs would release Seibold from his contract in 2019 if he is successful in his application for the Broncos job.

The Rabbitohs have lined up assistant coach David Furner as the replacement for Seibold, despite Furner agreeing a deal to coach the Leeds Rhinos in the Super League next season.

  1. I can understand Seibold wanting to go to QLD in 2020 but he can’t stay at Souths for 2019 – there would have to be a conflict of interest just like West Tigers.

Why not do a direct swap with Bennett? I am not a Bennett fan but it would save a lot of issues and maybe bring a few players that Souths have been chasing. At least you know what you are getting with Bennett, a proven winner.

    • agree he should P.O now… but no idea who for ???
Demetriou seems to be well regarded, but would/should we risk a “back-to-back” rookie coach… what r the chances of both being successful in their inaugural year….
History shows when Bennett leaves he has left the place in a bit of a mess… (he can’t have too many more years left)…..

    • Bennett at Souths? NEVER! He had his chance and played the Rabbitohs off against Newcastle so he could get a bigger paycheque from Tinkler. Too bad the cheque bounced!

If Bennett morphed into a Bunny I would have been more negative against our coach than “the angry eagle” was with Trent Barrett when he used to sound anti-manly and argued with his fellow Sea Eagles supporters.

We Rabbitohs supporters are one happy family chalky. Don’t wish for something that could divide us. Bennett would never respect or value our culture like Madge did.

        • I was about to say “fair enough” but then I checked with “Big Bird” and he remembers things a little differently. He remembers you were a little a “Oscar the Grouch” at the time in defence of Elmo (holmsey) and the 3 of you, along with Sam the Eagle (EagleRock), made a real Miss Piggy’s breakfast of the whole affair.

I also remember that “Big Bird” was the ONLY one to talk out against Barrett’s appointment and he was shouted down for this by more than just one for this (along with his “revolutionary” views on positional play for DCE).

Or was it the whole “membership has it’s privileges” bombshell that set feathers flying? So many seagulls, so few chips… it’s hard to sort it all out now.

Anyway, don’t shoot the messenger screaming, “Big Bird” will be dropping by soon to relive old times. Big Bird! Bahahahahahahahahaha πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

      • I agree with the ”one big happy family”, but an outsider will always struggle with that. As I said, I’m not a Bennett fan but who else? Not Furner, perhaps Demetriou or O’Brien? The only reason I suggested Bennett was to make a changeover easier. But that seems to be a bridge too far.

  2. THAT’s a fine way to say “Thank you”. First Crichton now Seibold. South’s are great at giving rookies an opportunity and developing and encouraging them but are less successful at having their good faith repayed by ungrateful, greedy personalities that are more concerned with self-interest and opportunism than principles, loyalty and reciprocity. They are happy to receive an opportunity gratefully with both hands but leave before the paint has dried and their debt is paid.

I hope that they both nose dive in their post-Rabbitohs careers just like Chris Shadow and Dave Taylor did.

On the other hand I wish every success to Madge, Chris McQueen and Jason Clark (unless they come up against Souths).

Souths have endured more difficult trials in 110 years than this and they will come through OK regardless. But there could be a few lean seasons ahead before we see another harvest unfotunately.

Had Seibold signed on for another 2 years I am confident that premiership number 22 would have arrived before that contract ended. Oh well, c’est la vie! Or as Ned once said; “Such is life!”.

    • I get the annoyance at losing someone you took a punt on but that is always going to be part of the gamble. You sign someone unproven to a short contract to give them a chance to prove themselves and when they do everyone and their dog will come a knocking.

Seibold is even more understandable since he is being given an opportunity to return home.

      • The problem paulo (and I think I can speak for all RL fans here) is that it is a ridiculous situation for the game that players and coaches can be signed so far ahead. Bennett, Seibold and Cleary ALL had contracts for 2019 and all this drama should be being played out at the end of the 2019 season. Now the game has shot itself in the foot by allowing this situation to develop to where we now find ourselves… talking about “untenable” situations or positions as an excuse for either party to break what should be a binding contractual agreement. It is a total fiasco!

  3. No shock there with that news, so what now? Bennett says he is going nowhere in 2019 and Souths cannot keep him for this year, does this mean that we pay him out for 2019, i hope not, does he leave voluntarily, i doubt it, very messy and disappointed in Seibolb big time, this will set back Souths and what do players think when a first year coach doesn’t want to be there, the people on this site will have a field day with us Souths supporters on this, get ready for it! I can just see Woody waxing up his fingers right now
Best scenario is a straight swap with Bennett but not going to happen, Souths have signed Furner apparently, kiss 2019 goodbye i’m afraid.

  4. That’s what I want to see. Him or Kevvie were my main choices, and Siebold is pretty well perfect for the job. Should revitalise a failing attack.

    • Firstly let me say I wanted Seibs to stay (as I’m sure every Rabbitoh did) – but word has it that Furner did a lot of work on our attack.. and just to be clear I’m not endorsing Furner here either…
I’ve NFI who should be coaching us now… but don’t think Seibs should be at Souths in 2019.

      • Don’t know about that. But the coach swap is a done deal..
Tpjdoes want to be coached by Bennett, but also had just come out and said will be at broncos 2019 so not sure what happens

        • I just checked South’s website – I take my hat off to you. Was that a fluke or did you know what others didn’t?

        • Wasn’t a fluke, would of said it in a stirring way if I was just taking the p!ss
Did hear about through someone, seemed to all happen very quickly..

        • How ironic Bob that a Rabbitohs supporter should be breaking news regarding Manly’s coaching changes BEFORE their members are even aware of it and that a Sea Eagles supporter should be doing the same in return for the Rabbitohs coaching change!

Could this be the start of a new era of bilateral cooperation between our two warring clubs? I think we can both safely assume the answer to that is “I bl00dy hope not!” πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
