Reports mid week from the Cowboys indicated that they were bracing for plenty of chatter from Tigers fans on Thursday night after Scott Bolton's teary press conference.

Although this was written prior to the game being played, I have little doubt that the odd Tigers fan will take a moment to remind Cowboys players and fans of their prop forward's alleged indiscretion from last weekend.

There may have even been a Tigers player who made a sly comment as the two sides packed into a scrum.

A few comments on social media, a few humerous, a few that obviously crossed the line, lead to discussion on whether or not player and club indiscretions should be fair game for players and fans alike.

I love a bit of banter and encourage it openly on social media and in the comment section here. Clever comments can create an atmosphere and make rivalries even more fun. Then again, some comments cross a line and create a bitter taste in your mouth.

As a Sharks fan I've more than heard my fair share of peptide jokes. Some make it hard to hide a wry smile, while others have you rolling your eyes and urging those responsible to move on and find some new material.

I know it certainly never got old being reminded of never winning a premiership prior to the greatest night in rugby league history on October 2nd 2016.

Then there was the year the mighty black, white and blue were struggling and copped a wooden spoon-themed welcome into Brookvale Oval by the old enemy the Sea Eagles.

That was quality, harmless and made it all the more fun having a beer on the hill of the worst football ground in the NRL competition.

I'm all for reminding the Storm of their past salary cap issues. I laughed almost to tears when the purple ran out a week after the scandal broke to be met by fans waving $50 notes and bags of money. There isn't a game I've been too since that someone hasn't referenced a boat during Cameron Smith's lining up of a conversion.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed a non finals win more than beating the Raiders the first time Blake Ferguson returned to the Shire after bashing the club and saying we couldn't win a premiership. He had a shocker and the Raiders were easily outplayed, leading to much fun being had on his side of the field.

No one can claim to be a Sharks fan until they have been blocked by Blake Ferguson on social media for reminding him of the Sharks winning more titles than he has since leaving the club to win a premiership ring.

That is quality and he actively brought that upon himself. For the record we've been on the receiving end of a few Ferguson sprays in our time. It goes with the territory.

That kind of tongue in cheek fun is absolutely fair game.

Who hasn't gifted their close friend a wooden spoon following a last place finish by their footy team?

For the record I, personally, stay away from the more serious stuff. Sometimes players and clubs bring it upon themselves. The obvious statement is, if you don't want to cop grief for stupid decisions, don't make stupid decisions.

That said, when I'm at a game, often with my young son, I'm all about having a laugh and supporting my team. If I can get a cheap laugh from a tongue in cheek comment then that's a bonus.

The Dragons had a good time booing Matt Lodge upon his return to the game. Without going too far into it, he would have expected that and far worse.

I didn't see too many non Broncos fans on social media that night hanging grief on Dragons fans that night.

Were they right to express their displeasure at the situation or should they have sat on their hands and used a different forum?

The Dragons themselves copped plenty when Wendell Sailor returned to the game after his stint in Union and his two years suspension. They copped it sweet from memory.

That reminds me of our trip to Kogarah a few days after the Damien Keogh story broke. We were reminded about that throughout the 80 minutes but returned serve by joking we'd be heading back to the leagues club to do lines off the premiership trophy after collecting the two competition points.

Plenty of laughs were had, absolutely nothing came of it, and I remember exchanging a few laughs and high fives with fans of the joint-venture club.

That was a great night made even better by lighthearted comments on the hill.

I'm a little hesitant to engage in the far more serious issues but that, again, is just me.

Let us know below what you think. Is lighthearted, or even not-so lighthearted banter fair game when it comes to on and off-field indiscretions?
