South Sydney have a fight on their hands to keep hold of hooker Damien Cook.

The NSW Origin, Australian and Dally M Hooker of the Year comes out of contract at the end of next season and has already attracted interest from Parramatta, West Tigers and Newcastle.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Cook’s preference is to remain at the Rabbitohs and has reportedly been offered a five-year $4.3 million deal beginning in 2019.

The deal would be an improvement on his current contract, which will see him earn $300,00 next season.

Incoming Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett is eager to retain the hooker, while former coach Michael Maguire is interested in reuniting with the 27-year-old at the Wests Tigers.

Maguire is a big fan of Cook and re-signed the No.9 at South Sydney in 2016, after he had asked for a release to join the Cronulla Sharks.

  1. If there is any intelligent players still playing for Souths, once becoming aware of Bennett’s apparent arrival possibly in 2019. Then to save one’s career the best and only option is to reneged on your contracts whilst there is a small widow of opportunity.

    • “If there is any intelligent players still playing”, “only option is to reneged on your contracts” and “widow of opportunity”

Classic stuff there Russ but isn’t it a little too early to be hitting the bottle? 😂😂😂

  2. I’d love to see him at Newcastle. That’s what they need to become genuine premiership contenders. Even at the tigers, I think he’d flourish under Maguire, and is probably more likely to win a premiership in the coming years there than at Souths. Souths won’t have it in them in 2019, what with the coaching debacle. Then ‘Little Head’ Wayne comes to the joint to put the icing on the ‘no premiership cake’.

If I was Damien, I’d be getting out while I still can. If he doesn’t, it shows a whole lot of loyalty to souths

    • I agree, Cook will never win a comp while Bennett is coach. Souths are in a bad situation here with Cook having a brilliant year just as his contract is coming up for renewel and now Soufths have to pay top dollar to retain him. Personally as his career has been wasted on low dollars and as he was a late bloomer I believe he wont be like a lot of Rooster players and hang around a successful club for a few bucks less and gain premiership glory. I believe he will make up for lost money making opportunities in the past and grab the massive bucks on offer, and who could blame him. If Soufths don’t give him 1 mil or really close to it then kiss this excellent player bye bye.🤣😂🤣😂👴🎱🎯🎱🎯🎱🎯🎱👍

  3. What a load of BS . Maguire a fan . He sat him on the bench the entire time Maguire was at Souths, behind McInnes and Farah. It’s laughable. His first touch in the red n green was in the Charity Shield , showed blistering speed , ran about 45 mtrs and was pulled down just short of the line . Every bunnies supporter who knew anything about the game screamed for Maguire to give him ago but the arrogance of the tosser wouldn’t allow it . He is no fan .

  4. Dont get me wrong, I like Cook as a player and he deserves everything that has come his way this year but i think he is being over valued at the moment. Not because he isnt the best in his position at the moment but because he isnt THAT much better than anyone else. If i could pick between Cook at a little over 800 000 and any of the next tier of hookers at about 500 000 then id be signing one from the next tier.
