Blues coach Brad Fittler believes fans haven't seen the last of Sam Burgess after the 30-year-old was forced to medically retire from the game due to a debilitating shoulder injury.

Burgess announced his retirement on Wednesday, with the international star still having three years remaining on his Rabbitohs contract.

If the NRL is to grant South Sydney's salary cap dispensation request, Burgess will likely be ruled out of any future involvement of playing in Australia ever again.

League legend Fittler believes that Burgess will likely return to the playing field some time in the future.

"I’m not convinced he is finished forever ... has he said he has retired forever?” Fittler said on his Freddy and the Eighth podcast.

“I know he’s said he’s retired but next year might just be a year where he goes away (and sorts it out).

“It might have a lot to do with the insurance side of things, a bit of strategy around South Sydney being able to have his cap value put back on their limit.

“I just feel like I haven’t seen the end of Sam. I would love him to have the year off, get everything sorted and go and get fixed.

“He seems too young, and has too much to offer.

“Even with a sore shoulder the way he was playing at the back end of the year says that there is more footy in him.”

While Burgess will likely be ruled out of playing in Australia, he could potentially pull on a shirt for an overseas side.

  1. Rumor has it Penrith have offered Sam The Facebook Flasher Burgess a 1.5 million dollar contract, to carry the Penrith Catz of the field when JWH and his back to back Premiership winning pack….. smash those softy Penrith Catz around as if they were as soft as Souths softy forwards in this seasons semi final encounter.
He needs to sign soon because the Worlds greatest pack of forwards those mighty Sydney Roosters are heading out to the sticks around Penrith way in round 1.

“Spot on Adam, remember when TWITONE announced to everybody that Souths had the best pack in the comp. Bwahahahahahahaha”

Yes, best pack but not the best ref as we saw in the GF.
V’landys said his main priority is to fix the refereeing problems obviously after the sham in the GF which cost the rightful team of victory.

  3. Congratulations Cameron Murray on you fan demanded debut for Kangaroos tonight.
I hear Meniga has apologised after the massive outcry by all NRL fans for leaving you out of the NZ game.
Hope no rep Radley has done a good job polishing your boots.

  4. Just like Twitone the fool when he posted his thirty paragraph theory post on how a particular referee who did not officiate the grand final was goung to make sure the Roosters win. But in his thirty paragraph conspiracy theory he did not mention it did not matter who officiated the grand final, Sydney Rooster brilliance was always going to prevail.

  12. Souths are 6 premierships in front of easts hey dont worry it took easts to equal the defunct stgeorge dragons on 15 premierships whom are both on equal second position it took easts 111 years to equal the now non existant defunct stgeorge dragons whom dont exist no more after merging with the illawarra steelers to become a new identity now called stgeorgeillawarra. I actually respect the stgeorge dragons even though they no longer exist after merging with another club…
