Despite being dropped by the NSW side, Latrell Mitchell is a wanted man by many in the upcoming free agency period.

But according to The Sydney Morning Herald, the Sydney Roosters will not engage in a bidding war for his services, something he might be in the middle of with Canterbury prepared to offer him approximately one million a year for the next five.

The Roosters will offer him, what they consider, a competitive contract that will leave him as one of the highest paid players in the league. But if money is his main motivator, he might be better off looking elsewhere.

Roosters brass believe the opportunity to be competitive in Sydney would hopefully offset a salary sacrifice if he stays.

Roosters and NSW skipper Boyd Cordner said coach Trent Robinson was best placed to get the best out of Mitchell.

"I'm sure Robbo, Nick [Politis] and the club have plans in place to keep him at the club," Cordner said.

"It's eyebrow-raising stuff when you hear about the massive deal supposedly on offer for him.

"But Latrell knows how much we love him at the Roosters. I've spent a lot of time with him, I watched him debut, and I know he loves the club.

"He's a Rooster. We want him there a long time."

The Roosters will have more than one responsibility this offseason as Siosiua Taukeiaho, Jake Friend, Joseph Manu, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Nat Butcher also finish their contracts at the same time as Mitchell, meaning rivals can also pounce on them from November 1.

Sydney has a lot of decisions to make soon and their team can go in plenty of directions. It'll be interesting to see what happens next.

  1. LOL @ Daffy

Keep dreaming buddy 2 more years after this> you guys signed him.

Donrt be surprised if the dogs push Mitchells pricing through the roof – the roosters retain him and all along they want Joseph Manu and the roosters don’t have enough paper bags to hold onto both

    Typical Peter Moore approach

  2. Smell a rat.
Won’t engage in a bidding war on the surface is what they should be saying.
Latrell might end up saying he’s happy with $800k to stay but no mention of another $500k in 3rd party payments.

  3. Looking at the others off contract Taukeaiho is the only one worth a crack at.
The others are has been nobodies.
I believe Freind is getting a job as a garden gnome at Politis’s house when he retires.

  4. It’s no secret Latrell is not happy at that dump and the line about Wobbinson being good for him is comical.
Robbo couldn’t coach a potato peeler.
Everyone who knows anything knows that Cronk coaches that side and Robbo is the post match media presenter.

  5. Mate NRL is mercenary, if this dud fails to get them into the 8 he should be fired by end of season. Contract means nothing.

  6. you could easily apply that statement to Bennett’s career as well. he needed great teams to win comps, as proven by his Knights stint. Same could be said about Ricky Stuart in 2002 as well. Or Paul Green in 2015

  7. Latrell is a good player but he has fundamental and large lapses. I have long believed that while he could win a final he could lose it with his behaviour at the worst possible time (he seems easy to manipulate). He does not have the track record of the likes of a Jonah Lomu ( he is actually much less impressive than Jonah) in busting lines yet he gets paid a fortune. Would I be worried if he left Roosters? Not really. I see him as a problem player. It is like buying an Alfa Romeo and wondering why you are paying massive mechanical bills.

  8. More bad news for you.
Just signed Su’a from the Broncos.
    Will be announced soon.
Wants out and play under Wayne.
    Glad we freed up Crouton.
