Knights chief executive Matt Gidley has dismissed a report suggesting the club is trying to offload senior playmaker Jarrod Mullen, saying there is “no truth to it whatsoever’’.

Mullen’s agent, Steve Gillis, added that: “Nobody has ever mentioned it to me.’’

But Knights coach Nathan Brown did not sound quite so definite, admitting that Newcastle were in a “vulnerable” position with their salary cap and needed to make tough decisions.

Asked if he was referring to Mullen, named in the Sunday Telegraph as likely to “become the face of a $2 million clean-out at the Knights”, Brown replied: “I haven’t spoken to him. Unless someone else did, I haven’t spoken to him at this stage.’'
