Newcastle cult hero Nathan Ross has reportedly told teammates he will be retiring from the NRL due to an ongoing groin injury that will keep him from returning to first grade level.
According to NRL.com, the NRL will still need to determine whether it will officially be a medical retirement, although Ross has already spoken to the club about hanging up the boots.
Ross debuted for Newcastle as a 27-year-old in 2015, and scored 23 tries during his 60 first grade appearances for the Knights.
The winger was always going to struggle to break his way into the Knights' side after off-season acquisitions Jesse Ramien and Edrick Lee joined the club, although he wasn't given the chance to prove himself given his fitness levels never returned to where they should be.
Ross was recently linked with a move away from the club, although he decided to stay given his contract runs out at the end of the 2020 season.
