St George Illawarra have put a red line through troubled Todd Carney and Jackson Hastings joining the Dragons.

The club was initially keen to negotiate with both playmakers as replacements for Benji Marshall next year but has made an abrupt about-face.

It is understood the Dragons were warned off signing 30-year-old Carney by the NRL, while they decided not to pursue 20-year-old Hastings due to concerns about whether his personality would fit into their squad.

  1. I thought the dragons were the kings of reforming bad boys? I agree with not signing Carney as he is 30 now and a bit past it. Hastings on the other hand is 20 and can turn his attitude around.

  2. Not Carney, that’s the last clown we would need in our club. He seems to have behaved himself OS – probably with the threat of deportation hanging over him if he plays up.
Hastings needs a good coach to bring him up and Mary doesn’t have that ability.
I actually feel sorry you for Drew Hutchinson next year as I’m not sure who will mentor him

  3. Idk why dragons wouldn’t atleast offer hastings something he would be worth a punt and is a local junior, i think the roosters have made him a bit of a scapegoat for their poor season.
Pick him up for depth and give Hutchinson first shot.

  4. I agree with all of the above regarding Carney.
Pedro, like you, I feel sorry for Hutch, but I’m also concerned that if he can’t handle the top grade, who do we fall back on?
McCrone was given opportunities last season, but he didn’t produce any attacking flare.
They say that Kurt Mann has put his hand up, he has previous lower grade and junior experience in the halves. However, I still believe Mann was made the scapegoat for the flogging we copped from the shirees in round 2. I firmly believe if we had a decent coach, Mann would have continued at fullback and been a success, and Dugan would have got better, in the centres, with time. Mann should be given another opportunity at FB, look what he’s done since he came back to Firsts.
But I digress. If Hutch can’t cut it, what do we do?
The Rorters gutted Hastings and he has a real point to prove. We could pick him up on the cheap, he’s a local junior and he’s proved, with the right team around him, he can play NRL. Once again, our Recruitment department show no foresight, instead, they heap all the pressure on Hutch to perform. Which he may do, but look at the lack of coaching support he has at our club. MacGregor will dump him the moment we lose 2 straight, and that will be rounds 1 and 2. We will then be back with McCrone at 7, guaranteeing yet another attack-less season.
Throw a few bucks at Hastings, bring in Andrew or Matty Johns as a mentor and I reckon we will end up with one, or possibly two classy halfbacks.
But we know that won’t happen, our club administration lack the common sense and the foresight to do that!!!

    • Mann is a future star with the right coach, despite only playing about 10 games in first grade he was our top try scorer. He’s wasted on the wing and needs to have a chance at 5/8, move Widdop to half. Alternatively try put Mann at FB, Dugan to 5/8, Widdop to half, and coach the bejeesus out of Dugan’s passing game. Dugan has to be in a position to get more ball in his hand. He was incredibly talented individual when we got him and we seemed to have turned him into a plodder this year, we exorcised his flair.

  5. Probably a good call from the dragons.
Initial reports form Catalans indicated that Carney had been let go due to playing standards dropping but lately there seems to be reports that he was let go as he was getting up to old tricks and playing up too much off the field….this guy just never learns and doubt that he ever will.
As far as hastings goes, reports are that he doesn’t fit in anywhere, his ego is massively out of control and has refused to follow the coaches instructions both on and off the field. The boy can play but if you aint a team player then you shouldn’t be in a team – maybe a couple of years on little coin working the lower grades may help him.
Saints fans – is a bad signing better than no signings? In my view – NO.

  6. Dragons as a club and their supporters are equally pathetic. Always quick to point fingers like they’re some accustomed top 4 team. Your team sucks, management and most important business potential sucks don’t go bagging your coach who I believe has done a great job with limited resources.

    • Oh look dunnybill the drunken racist, pipes up with more of his BS, just like his bumchum beleiveniothignIsay. The only one that sucks here is you dunnybill.
