The St George Illawarra Dragons have announced that Tariq Sims will join the Club effective immediately after being released by the Newcastle Knights.

The local Gerringong Lions junior, who can play up front and in the second-row, had previously agreed to a three-year contract which would have seen him join the Club next season.

Sims, 26, made his first-grade debut for the North Queensland Cowboys during the 2011 campaign and spent four seasons at the Townsville-based club prior to joining the Knights in 2015.

The former Junior Kangaroo has played 98 NRL games in addition to representing both the Fiji Bati and NSW Country Origin team (2012-16) on five occasions each.

β€œIt is welcoming news to have a local junior such as Tariq join the Club earlier than what had originally been expected,” said Director of Rugby League Pathways Ian Millward.

β€œTariq is a natural leader having most recently been co-captain of the Newcastle Knights and we know that he will be a good fit for our Club.”

Sims will join the Dragons later this week.

  1. Over rated player good luck dragons waste of space. I wonder who we will sign now to make up for it?! We have money to spend now surely

  2. Good move. Guys mud does nothing on the field but give away stupid penalties now we can spend the money on someone who will break the line and pop an offload we need some grunt and Xfactor around these kids.
If we get bird and lewis that would help alot but we would still need a front rower and An Xfactor player

  3. Should try sign Segyaro from the Panthers and Vaughn from the Raiders. Those two signings would make a huge difference. Then sign Hardaker, Lewis, Peachey and Hannant for next year and they’ll win more games than they lose

    • No, we gave them Peter Mata Utai earlier this year. lol

There is talk that we may give them Jake Marketo too. lol

    • Just out of interest, when the bronco’s signed Milford.. did anybody ever suggest to you that they then owed the Raiders Hunt or even a Nikorima?

      No? Surely?

    • Yeah, but what about when they have Frizell back?

      mine would be:
      8. Ah Mau (Masoe if he was uninjured)
      9. Rein
      10. Packer
      11. Frizell
      12. Thompson
      13. Sims
      14. Havili
      15. De Belin
      16. Cooper/Marketo
      17. Lui/Marketo

just not sure if he will push Thompson to bench or if he will play lock after Frizell is back.

  4. Tariq is a great competitor. He can smash runners with his defence. He will add some mongrel and toughness to our pack.

Hopefully he can finally fulfill the potential he had as a rookie? I know that many say that he has not been the same since his broken leg.

    • He needs to aim up a bit, i cant disagree with some of the Knights fans comments – he goes missing at times and does some stupid stuff. I get the feeling Saints realize they probably paid to much for Joel T but he never goes missing in defense & always plays 100%.
If he proves me wrong – good luck to him.
