Willie Tonga

During coverage of Friday nights match between the Parramatta Eels and the Wests Tigers, Peter Sterling mentioned that he’d been talking to Eels CEO Paul Osbourne about an outside back signing for the club.

This comment has sent the rumour mill into overdrive and the most likely candidate seems to be North Queensland Cowboys international centre Willie Tonga.

The 27 year old Tonga started his career with the Eels, debuting in 2002. He then joined the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs where he won the Dally M Centre of the Year award before moving to North Queensland. Tonga has played 10 matches for Australia and 7 for Queensland in State of Origin.

Tonga has struggled with injuries during his tenure with the Cowboys and has been rumoured for quite a while to be disenchanted with North Queensland coach Neil Henry.

The Eels have recently signed Tonga’s younger brother Esi Tonga  for the 2012 season.
