Perth’s dream is Gosford’s nightmare – with the West Australian franchise’s bid for an NRL team gaining momentum.
The plans of mining multi-millionaire Tony Sage and league great Ben Elias for a team in the west appear to have leapfrogged the Central Coast’s bid, and now sits alongside a new Ipswich team as favourite when the sport talks expansion in June.
NRL chief executive David Gallop emerged from a meeting with Sage and Elias yesterday and declared: “The merits of a team out of Perth are obvious”.
Gallop’s preliminary support for a Perth side came as league legend Andrew Johns revealed a WA team was a “no brainer”.
The Daily Telegraph understands Perth, Ipswich and Gosford are the only three contenders for two potential NRL spots, if the premiership is to expand to 18 clubs as rumoured in 2015. Wellington and PNG are thought to be no chance, with Central Coast narrowly in third place ensuring the Bears look set to remain in the NSW Cup.
