The Brisbane Broncos' decision to part ways with Wayne Bennett could see them lose a number of stars.

The Broncos face a major battle to retain Corey Oates as North Queensland have emerged as a contender for the winger.

A fortnight ago, Oates revealed he would consider leaving the Broncos if they did not re-sign Bennett.

According to The Courier-Mail, the Cowboys have made inquiries about the Maroons' Origin winger as they plan a recruitment drive after the retirement of Johnathan Thurston.

The Cowboys have already secured Ben Barba on a one-year deal and have now set their sights on Oates.

Oates’ manager George Mimis revealed the Origin star has a close relationship with Bennett but says the 23-year-old’s preference is to remain a Bronco.

“Corey has a wonderful relationship with Wayne,” Mimis said.

“But he also has complete faith in the Broncos’ management and their future plans for the club beyond 2019.

“Whilst our negotiations are ongoing, Corey aspires to be a long-term Bronco player.”

The Broncos will also need to work hard to retain Matt Lodge and Tevita Pangai Jr, who have yet to sign new deals this season.

Lodge is expected to ink a new two-year deal with the Broncos, but there are concerns Pangai Jr, who was incredibly close to Bennett, could depart along with the coach.
