Off-contract Brisbane utility Kodi Nikorima could wait until after the State of Origin period before making a call on his NRL future.

But the versatile 22-year-old appears to be delaying the inevitable, with the Broncos unable to match neither the money nor playing opportunities available in the reported offer on the table from Melbourne.

The Storm are attempting to entice Nikorima with the chance to become a starter in the halves – something Brisbane cannot do with playmakers Ben Hunt and Anthony Milford well and truly entrenched in their positions.

Joining a Melbourne spine that includes Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater in 2017 is a tantalising prospect, but it’s a decision he isn’t keen to rush into.

  1. I really like Greeny this year but if Green doesn’t resign I’m more than happy to take Kodi. Good pickup. His not a bad hooker either, maybe play him at 6 until Smith leaves then move to Hooker with Drinkwater coming into 6…maybe Drinkwater and Kodi will be the halves in a few years.

    • I think that is the exact idea. Have Kodi come down, learn off Cronk for the next 2yrs and play during origin/fill in with injuries (he can also play FB/FE). Then when Cronk retires he will partner Green with Drinkwater eventually partnering Kodi as the long-term halves moving forward.

From recent interviews it seems Kodi is more concerned with a pathway to a starting position then to have a starting position immediately.

  2. Hope he stays, we’ve lost Granville and Parcell in the last two seasons who were both in his position. I don’t think he’s quite ready for a starting position and I think he thinks the same thing which is why he doesn’t want to leave. He should bide his time for now as a super sub and learn as much as he can from Bennett and being around the Broncos culture. If he leaves now I can see him ending up like his brother. I think Broncos should shed Travis Waddel, Alex Glenn, Herman Eseese, Francis Molo, Ajuma Adams, Lachlan Maranta, Greg Eden, Aaron Whitchurch, Zac Strasser. Milford and Gillett should be the priority signings and then Nikorima

  3. Cant see him leaving the Broncos if he really wants to stay. bring in a brown paper bag, he will play for 1-2 yrs and then move on, why leave a strong side for a chance to start when you are all but certain to be in the 17 each week at broncos.
