Former Parramatta, Canberra and Warriors forward Justin Morgan has been linked to the New Zealand club’s vacant coaching job for next season.
Morgan, who has been coaching Hull Kingston Rovers since 2005, is understood to have spoken to Warriors management since the club decided to release Ivan Cleary from the final year of his contract to take charge of Penrith.
Morgan is under contract to Hull KR but speculation in England at the weekend suggests he would coach the Warriors with former New Zealand coach Brian McClennan as coaching director.
McClennan steered the Kiwis to victory in the 2005 Tri Nations final against Australia and was in charge the next season when the Kangaroos snatched a golden-point win in the decider at Sydney Football Stadium. He has been the favourite for the job since the Warriors announced Cleary’s departure a month ago, and it seems certain he will be at the club next season in some capacity – either as head coach or coaching director.
Warriors and Kiwis assistant Tony Iro has also been mentioned as the next coach with either McClennan or the club’s premiership-winning under-20s coach John Ackland as coaching director.
But the fact he wasn’t appointed at the time Cleary’s departure was announced suggests the Warriors are looking elsewhere.
