There are almost a million reasons why Manly won’t grant Anthony Watmough a release from the final year of his contract – and why they’ve started negotiations to keep him at Brookvale until the end of 2017.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal Watmough is on Manly’s books for a whopping $970,000 next season, making him impossible to shift without suffering a huge salary cap hangover.
In order to keep the nucleus of their ace team at Brookvale, Watmough and Stewart have spent the past three seasons deferring representative bonuses and salary cap increase windfalls.
The sacrifices resulted in the current contracts of both players being ridiculously weighted on the final year, which warehoused all the bonus payments. It’s understood these deferred payments make up $300,000 of the final year of Watmough’s contract, an amount Manly would have to bear on their 2015 should they release the 31-year-old.
