during the round nine NRL match between the Gold Coast Titans and the Melbourne Storm on May 1, 2016 in Gold Coast, Australia.

Ironman forward Luke Douglas has vowed to fight for his NRL future on the Gold Coast amid speculation he is on the outer at the club.

The likeable prop was one of three high-profile contracted players, along with William Zillman and Josh Hoffman, told by coach Neil Henry in recent weeks they are free to leave the Titans.

Henry immediately shut down any questions relating to the matter when asked yesterday but Douglas has declared his intentions to remain a fixture in the side.

  1. The Titans are still struggling to understand that in order to be a popular and well subscribed Queensland NRL team, their top 17 squad needs to be predominantly populated with quality Queensland born players. Right or wrong, Queensland rugby league fans are very tribal and tend not to support teams compromised with a number of New South Welshmen. Whilst the Broncos and Cowboys have been able to accommodate some New South Wales players in their top 17 (Coote, Tamau, Roberts) both team are flush with quality Queensland born players and a smattering of Kiwis and/or Pacific Islanders. It seemed like the Titans had cottoned on to this with the signings of Shillington, Friend, McQueen and Taylor in the off season. However the decision to sign Roberts and Peats instead of Segeyaro and now release Hoffman (an excellent Queensland born winger) and Zillman (a fantastic Queensland born fullback) demonstrates otherwise. Personally for 2016 I think the Titans should retain Zillman and Hoffman, re sign Cameron Cullen, who has the makings of an excellent hooker, make efforts to sign Norman, Kenny Bromwich, Molo and Moga, all of whom are off contract at seasons’ end and then focus on moving on Peats, Don, Douglas, Kelly, Olive, Pettybourne, Roberts, Bird and Taia and progressively replacing them with the likes of Arrow, Napa, Guerra etc as they come off contract.

    • haha you got to be kidding – zillman (a fantastic Queensland born fullback)— QLD born but thats about it

    • I agree with you regarding the need for more queenslanders. I dont think state eligibility has been considered in previous signings. But you would have to be silly getting rid of peats he is going to be a key member of the team for years to come. He cant be far off being picked for origin. Realistically Segeyaro will never be at the same level as Peats.
Unfortunately for Zillman his best days are past him. A standout fullback should be the main focus for Titans recruitment over the off season. The rest of the positions can be filled with the players we have. I would like to see Bird released to Newcastle (mainly because they could really do with him), but only if he was replaced with Guerra.
I also think your right about Cullen he has would make a great bench player if he could cover both the halfs and hooker role. He appears to have a lot of potential
